Hello everyone! I bought my XFX 7900 GRE about 6 months ago brand new from best buy. Ever since then, I've had trouble with driver crashes. They're constant and happen in every game except league of legends that I play, with some games (Cyberpunk, Fortnite in DX12) happening way more often (every 15-30 minutes).
It's gotten to the point where I'm considering RMA'ing the card but since it's my winter break and I don't want to not be able to play for 2 weeks I thought I'd reach out to the community to see if there's something I haven't tried.
Here are my system specs:
5800x3d CPU
4x8 3200mhz Corsair vengeance RAM
ASUS ROG B450-F Gaming Motherboard
1tb SN770 WD Black NVME
2tb Samsung 990 Pro NVME
250gb Samsung 850 Evo SATA
XFX 7900gre
EVGA 750GQ Gold 80+
UBIT Wifi 6e PCIE Network Card, 5400mbps Intel AX210
I've had it for nearly 4 years with no issue.
Peripherals
Viewsonic XG2431G 240hz 1080p Monitor
AOC 24C1 144hz 1080p Monitor
Razer Huntsman V3 Pro keyboard
Razer Deathadder V3 Pro mouse.
Headphones are either the Audio Technica MX50 BT2's over bluetooth or Razer's BlackShark V2's wired.
I also use a BLUE Yeti microphone, and sometimes a Razer Wolverine Chroma V2 Controller.
I owned all of these peripherals prior to the card and never had any problems.
The GPU never goes above 65-70 degrees max, CPU never above 80. Hotspot is not much hotter on either.
Things I have tried:
1. A multitude of different drivers, even rolling back as far as 23.8.1, currently on 24.12.1 it still occurs.
2. DDU'ing drivers at least 6 different occasions to install the new ones.
3. Installing MSI afterburner to undervolt, using REVO uninstaller to completely uninstall it after that didnt work.
4. Both Minimal and Full installs of Adrenalin, with and without GPU underclocked to 95% manually.
5. I have turned off Multi Plane Overlay, every special smart feature in adrenalin, and turned on and off XMP multiple times. I have also manually set the RAM Speed in bios with XMP off, this did not solve the problem.
6. I have tried swapping to the different bios included with my card, this made things worse.
7. I have completely (on 3 occasions) uninstalled and reinstalled the card after carefully cleaning dust and ensuring proper seating of ALL cables. I have used different power supply ports and cables, and the Power Supply 8 pins are not daisy chained.
8. I have reset my bios by removing the CMOS battery twice.
9. My BIOS is on the latest version as required to install the 5800x3d on an older board.
10. This occurs in games even if I am not using FSR, Frame Generation, or Ray Tracing (Overwatch 2 for example).
11. I have also disabled all AMD audio devices in device manager to no avail.
12. This problem happens no matter which programs I have open. I can close everything but my game and it will still crash.
13. I have tried stopping all windows updates
14. I still crash whether I am using 2 monitors or 1 monitor, at 240hz or 60.
I doubt this is the case but if the card does not support 10bit color on a monitor please let me know.
Otherwise the card is completely stock, I cannot overclock it, I cannot underclock it, I have maxed out the fans, maxed out power max, lowered power max, it all crashes the same. Some configs make it worse, but nothing I do stops it.
I have a couple of images taken from HWinfo of the card details during a crash, the first image is right before a driver crash playing CP2077 at Ultra settings 1080p. The second image is as my game froze and OBS shut down the recording. The change happens almost instantly, one frame to the next. The one interesting thing is that the video continues recording (using GPU) even after the power drops, not sure what this means.
If you guys would like the full video I can edit it and upload if need be. It's 14 minutes right now (The time it took from loading screen to crash in Cyberpunk).
If you guys want the clock speeds as well I can surely reproduce the issue, let me know.
I'm at my wits end, someone save me :'(
I wonder if your motherboard could be causing the crashes? I would try two things at this point:
(1) Look for another BIOS update for your motherboard and also look for chipset driver updates on your motherboard manufacturers website. Also check AMD.com for the chipset drivers.
(2) Try setting the PCIe from 4.0 to 3.0 and game at that setting for a bit.
I'll take a look. My motherboard doesn't support PCIE 4 But I was under the impression that PCIe 3 wasn't a big difference so I didn't upgrade it.
As of now it's been in PCIE 3 the whole time, but I'll definitely look into chipset drivers
Thanks!
Alright! Just installed the newest chipset I could find and updated to the most recent BIOS for my board. Also installed the newest Wifi driver for my network card just to make sure everything was up to date. I'll keep you updated!
Now the fun part begins....gaming like you've never gamed before. Let's hope you found the solution.
