Upgrading from a RX 6800 XT, would a RX 7900 XTX yield enough performance to justify the purchase, or should I skip this generation? I don't have any issues with the GPU I have, but I would like to have better performance with raytracing turned on.  

Are the issues with the reference cards overheating still present? 

What kind of performance gains would you want to see before you upgrade? Is a 20% boost in frames per second be enough?

what resolution to you play at?

I went from a Gigabyte RX 6800 Gaming OC  to the ASRock 7900XT Phantom Gaming OC  .. no regrets

I play at 1440p on my 27" 144hz 4ms Samsung gaming monitor .. secondary monitor is an ASUS 27" 60hz 1080p

1440p at 240hz when I'm playing competitive titles. I do play at a lower framerate in most games though just because I like to push the settings to max as long as it is around 90 average FPS. If you had to nail down a percentage increase over the RX 6800, what would you say it is?

I certainly would wait until the next generation of video cards come out, but I wonder how much of an increase you could get from a CPU upgrade (to the X3D series)?  No sense in jumping to AM5 just yet, given that you would be replacing CPU, memory, motherboard, etc.  I think you need to determine where the bottleneck is in your current system - video card or CPU.

It probably is the CPU that is bottlenecking. I would probably benefit from the X3D chip more. Considering the 5800X3D performs, for the most part, on par with the Ryzen 7000 series, it would be more cost effective to get the X3D chip. 

It is significantly cheaper to do a CPU upgrade compared to a GPU upgrade. 

I am more likely to be able to save up for a CPU upgrade in the short term, compared to the 900 to 950 USD it would take for a GPU upgrade worth buying. 

What kind of uplift would be worth upgrading for you?

I like my eye candy .. I primarily only play one game , Hunt:Showdown

I don't play competitively , so I have whatever can make a game potentially look better on/maxed in game and in Radeon settings

... I'd say about a 40'ish fps increase whatever percentage that works out to, lol. I don't really look at numbers though and go more off of how the game play feels and it's definitely a tighter gameplay experience with the 7900xt

I should start doing more before/after type logging for my next upgrade

That being said though .. your 5700x might end up bottlenecking a 7900xtx should you get one

I too enjoy the higher fidelity games have to offer on better hardware. I will have to keep considering it. It would all depend on what my budget will look like after I pay off some of my builds I did for friends and family. 

By that time, I would not be surprised to see the RDNA 4 GPUs released, along with the Zen 5 chips.

An RX 7900 XTX will give you around a 50% increase in frames over a 6800 XT.  However, whether or not that is "worth it" is entirely subjective.  An RX 6800 XT will probably give you over 90fps in most games at max quality on a 1440 display.  As the 7900 XTX pushes those frames higher, you are more likely to run into CPU bottlenecks.  However, the 7900 XTX will likely give you an acceptable ray tracing experience, especially at 1440 using FSR.   In those cases, you wouldn't have to worry about a CPU bottleneck either.
