Most of us have a life outside of computers, even if it's only for a few hours a day. Am I right? Yes, but I'm not counting our time sleeping. Surely everyone works on things that are non-computer related. That's what this topic is about.
My latest project, which was successful I might ad, was to armorize my birthday present - a composite plastic suet feeder for big birds like a Pileated Woodpecker. It was given to me near the end of January 2023, when I turned 64. I know - an old fart. But listen up guys, because you might learn something about squirrels. Yes, squirrels. They love bird feeders and things of this nature. They chew on everything. I bet that if I placed a computer case on our outside deck (filled with sunflower seeds or suet blocks), the squirrels will have chewed through the case within a few days. They are are strong and that intelligent.
So my new birthday present - the Pileated Woodpecker suet feeder - was placed outside on my birthday as a replacement for the previous wooden suet feeder that had been almost destroyed by the squirrels. Within two weeks there was already serious damage to the new composite plastic suet feeder, mostly on the bottom area. The squirrels know that the wire grid plates will drop out if the bottom and / or side structure of the feeder is chewed away. They are born with that knowledge. So yesterday, I spent 45 minutes fabricating an aluminum band around the bottom of my almost-new suet feeder. Recent aluminum bar fabrication techniques acquired while building 'Talk 2 the Hand' helped immensely, as I didn't need much more than the idea in my head and a vice in my workbench. See the results below. It's working so far.....
I guess my next project will be back tom the computer side and get the wife a new case. Her system is still in an old Antec full tower case that has been through at least 3 CPU's now. It rattles when she starts it up. I'm leaning towards another Corsair 540 AIR, but I really like what the Metallic Gear NEO CUBE design has to offer if I can find one in the marketplace. I'm going to check out the price difference of the Corsair with a new HYTE and may go that route. Have one of each, then make a judgement of which I like best.
If you get a sewing machine image laser-etched onto the window of the next case, I bet you'll earn some brownie points.
I think an etch on the side window would be awesome. I'm debating asking the vet to get some prints of Inigo's front paws the next time I take him to the vet for the express purpose of using one or both as a "Maker's Mark" if I start doing builds for other people again.
@Axxemann you'll like this one. I think I will just get a case with nor window. "Performance over pretty".
Just kidding.
Hey, I am looking at one of the mini lasers for etching. It runs around $250, but has all I need. Had I gotten it earlier I would have definitely etched something in that table.
Thanks for the comments and input.
Ain't nothing wrong with that! Fractal still makes cases without glass side panels!
I was going to go that route, but opted for a glass side so that people can "stare into the Void" of how dark, ominous and scary my rig will end up being.
Latest project is on the same topic of the sewing table. My wife wanted some drawers in the table but the size of it kind of hampered the design of putting them in the table. So she now has a mini chest of drawers that sits on the top slightly out of the way. It 13" deep, 13" high, and 8" wide. Solid walnut as the table and slightly over100 hrs. of labor.
One other thing. If you will notice the French Provincial door in the background, that was a project from before 2010. Here is closet door that measures 92" x 42" from about 20 years ago. Still don't have the door knob installed. LOL😂
He had a real knack for fixing things up too. Once, he turned an old door into a fancy dining table like it was nothing. lol
