HTC Vive Cosmos headset - Error 215: Check that your GPU driver is updated to the latest version.
The headset worked perfectly on my current system configuration approximately a year ago, but after a prolonged period of not using it, I attempted to set it up again recently and encountered this persistent error. My system has not undergone significant changes in this time, yet I am unable to resolve the issue.
Here are the details of my system and the troubleshooting steps I’ve already attempted:
System Configuration
Operating System: Windows 10
GPU: AMD RX 6700 XT
Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming X570-PLUS
BIOS Version: Most recent update applied (Version 5021, dated 2024.11.04)
Troubleshooting Steps Attempted
Driver Updates and Rollbacks:
Updated my AMD GPU drivers to the latest version.
Rolled back to earlier driver versions, including those verified to work with HTC Vive previously.
Installed the specific drivers recommended for HTC Vive.
BIOS Update:
Updated my motherboard BIOS to the latest version.
Verified all BIOS settings related to USB, PCIe, and GPU, including enabling “Above 4G Decoding” and “Re-Size BAR Support.”
Tried downgrading to an earlier BIOS version to rule out compatibility issues.
HTC Vive Software Reinstallation:
Completely uninstalled and reinstalled the HTC Vive Console, VIVEPORT, and associated software.
Checked for updates and ensured the latest version of the software was installed.
SteamVR Setup:
Verified SteamVR is up-to-date and compatible with the Vive Console.
Reset all settings in SteamVR to default and performed fresh room setup multiple times.
USB Port Testing:
Tried different USB ports (both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0).
Ensured my USB drivers were updated and checked for chipset driver updates.
GPU and Cable Checks:
Verified that my GPU and DisplayPort connections are functional with other devices.
Reconnected and inspected all headset cables to ensure they are securely attached and not damaged.
Verified compatibility with my riser cable and adjusted PCIe slot settings to Gen 3 in the BIOS.
General System Maintenance:
Verified Windows 10 is fully up-to-date.
Ran system integrity checks (e.g., sfc /scannow).
Despite all these efforts, the Error 215 persists, and I am unable to use the headset.
I am only able to use the headset as a monitor where the Windows desktop is displayed, but beyond that, it remains non-functional, and the Error 215 persists despite all my troubleshooting efforts.
Please let me know if there are any specific diagnostics or steps you recommend, or if I need to provide further information.
Thank you for your support!

Thank you for your suggestion and the shared thread. Unfortunately, I’ve already tried all of the recommended solutions, including resetting Windows, updating GPU drivers, and reinstalling the software, but none have resolved the issue. As a final test, I tried my HTC Vive Pro on my older PC with an NVIDIA GTX 1060 GPU, and it worked perfectly.
It seems the AMD RX 6700 XT has a fundamental compatibility issue.
Thanks for your help!
Went to VIVE COSMOS website (Australia) and here is the recommended AMD GPU Cards: https://www.vive.com/au/product/vive-cosmos/specs/
The RX 6700 isn't listed as a Recommended GPU card but it is still listed as being compatible by the Cosmos Minimum System requirements.
That site has a Cosmos Setup to download. See if by downloading that setup it might include the latest Headset driver for your Windows OS.
Otherwise I would open a VIVE COSMOS Support ticket and AMD SUPPORT TICKET from here: https://www.amd.com/en/forms/contact-us/support.html
EDIT: Try installing your VIVE Cosmos headset with a listed Recommended GPU card and see if you get the same error or not.
Also in Device Manager try to update your Headset or GPU driver if it has an error in it.
Thank you very much for your response. I downloaded and ran the Cosmos Setup, and now the error code is 201: HMD Display Not Found!
found this previous thread from Vive Cosmos forum concerning error 201: https://forum.htc.com/topic/9393-vive-cosmos-elite-error-201-displayport-not-working/
Couple of solutions from above thread in 2021 thread:
Note: you might want to also open a thread at VIVE COSMOS Forum.
