PC Keeps Crashing and Restarting While Playing Black Ops 6

Hey guys!

I recently got the new black ops game and was super excited to play it with some friends, but after a couple games (around 20-30 minutes of playing) it would randomly shut down mid game, and reboot.  And when it got back into the lock screen, I would audibly hear the windows 11 sound of the lock screen loading up, but my display wouldn't turn on for some reason.  I had practically no choice but to force shut down or turn off the power to my PSU.  This has happened probably over 25 times now after many failed attempts at fixing.

Things I Tried:

Updating GPU and CPU Drivers

Updating BIOS

AMD's cleanup tool and reinstalled new drivers

Swapped out my RAM

Did a GPU stress test while overclocked for 10 minutes (Didn't crash which makes me think my GPU is okay)

Manually set my GPU clock speed max to it's recommended base speed

The only thing that I can think of is reinstalling windows, but I wanna sure there's nothing else I can try before doing something that drastic.

My temperatures are all good, nothing ever goes above 75 celsius.

There is one other issue that is happening to my computer that may give insight or connect to the crashes. Every once in a while when I boot up my computer sometimes after a crash but sometimes completely normally, it'll not load some applications, I'll open them up in my taskbar but they stay in loading as either just a solid white window or whatever the color they make normally when loading up is.  Not only that but when this happens, I'll get lots of strange errors, and when I try to restart or shut down my computer, it won't work.  Not even pressing the power button on my pc works (aside from force shut down which is what I normally end up having to do).  It's super bizzare and hasn't ever happened to me before, although its extremely rare.

At first I thought it was just a driver issue, then I thought my PSU might have been faulty, than I thought it could be RAM (disproven after I swapped it out for a similar pair and the crash still happened).  Worst case scenario my GPU is having issues, but I think it's unlikely since I ran that stress test and nothing happened.

My PC's Specs:

Ryzen 7 5800x CPU

Radeon RX 6800XT XFX MERC319 GPU

Kingston Fury 16GBx2 3200mhz RAM

Thermaltake BM3 850W Gold PSU

Asus ROG Strix B550-A Motherboard

Cooled by 6 fans and a Thermalright AIO

If anyone knows of any solutions I can try than let me know, I'm desperate.

There could be some corrupted Windows files that are causing problems; corruption can happen during power loss or lockups.  Given what you have tried, I would go ahead and install Windows on top of itself - but first try the repair feature to see if the automatic process can improve or reduce your current crashes.

As Albert Einstein said, "I could have done so much more with a Big Al's Computer!".

Just tried using the command prompt method of repairing windows, (sfc /scannow and the restore health commands)  it didn't make any improvements.  Actually in the last day, (even before I updated anything or tried to repair windows), the game has started crashing only after one game, not sure why.

Anyway after that failed, I tried windows "Fix problems using Windows Update" which has gotten to 10% downloaded, then gives me the error, " This update cant be downloaded and installed because its not yet ready for your device."

After that I tried reinstalling graphics drivers again and chipset drivers but it changed nothing, game still crashing and "Fix problems using Windows Update"

is still not working.

I understand how to reinstall windows but how do I reinstall windows on top of itself? I can't find anything about that online. Also would that delete any of my files?

I believe you let the Windows installation run with the default location (C drive) and it should create a backup of the current Windows before it installs itself.  It's worked for me in the past.  Once I have it running well, I can then delete the backup Windows installation folder if space is tight.

Sounds like you've tried a lot already! I'd suggest running sfc / scan nowor DISM to check for system file corruption. If that doesn’t help, a fresh Windows install might be the best option. Also, consider running memtest86 just to be sure your RAM isn’t the issue. It’s frustrating, but hopefully one of these steps will solve it!

Alright.  Well I tried everything you guys suggested.  There's nothing wrong with my ram, I ran memtest and nothing looked concerning.  I used AMD DDU and installed new fresh drivers.  And I reinstalled windows using an iso drive because I didn't want to lose my files.  Assuming I didn't have to do a full wipe of everything, I feel like I've exhausted all my options.  The game is still doing the same crash.  The game runs a lot longer without crashing but still inevitably does.

At this point is it likely a hardware problem?  I can't remember if I said this before but I ran a stress test while overclocking my graphics card and absolutely nothing happened or crashed, which led me to believe its not a hardware issue.  I really want to avoid having to buy new parts because this is a relatively new build of mine.  Is there anything else I haven't tried yet that might help?  And if it is indeed my hardware acting up how can I figure out what part is faulty?

you've tried pretty much everything to rule out software and driver issues, which is a great start. Since the game still crashes eventually, it could be pointing to a hardware issue, but there are a few more things you could check:

  • Power Supply: A faulty or underpowered PSU can cause instability, even if stress tests don’t show issues. If you have access to a spare PSU, it’s worth swapping it in to see if that helps.

  • Temperature: Even if your stress tests look fine, sometimes spikes in temperature during gaming can cause crashes. Keep an eye on your CPU and GPU temps while gaming, just in case overheating is an issue.

  • Event Viewer: Check the Windows Event Viewer for any error codes or critical events that occur right before the crash. This could help pinpoint a specific problem, like a driver issue.

  • RAM: Even though your MemTest didn’t show errors, testing with one stick of RAM at a time could help rule out memory issues under load.

  • Different Game: If you haven’t already, try running a different game to see if the issue is isolated to that one game or if it happens across the board.

If the issue persists after all these checks, it could be worth testing individual hardware components or even contacting support for a potential RMA. Hopefully, you’re able to pinpoint the issue soon without having to replace too many parts!

I can't find any settings either within the game of Adrenaline that keep BO6 from constantly crashing.

This may sound silly, but for me...i had my 7800xt hooked up with one daisy chained pcie cable for my 2 8 pin connection on the gpu. Gpu board power can go all the way up past 250 watts once you are in a bo6 game. One pcie cable connections is only good for 150 watts. Hope im not insulting your intelligence but if all else failed, maybe double check you pcie connections to mske sure they are separate pcie cables...i know that its something i overlooked. Since fixing this issue, i am able to play on Extreme quality with no freezes, shutdowns, or crashes consistently

I'm gonna give this a try also. Use separate cables for each power connector. It's something I haven't tried soo.

I'm having the exact same problem. Previous driver releases haven't fixed it for me either.

I have the same issue with ryzen 7 5800x, RX 6800XT, 16 gb ram, 750w gold plus psu. The only thing thats help me to reduce the reboots is undervolt the cpu with -20 curve optimizer, with that my pc runs fine but in counter strike 2 keeps rebooting

Anyone had any luck with this? I can't play for more than a couple of minutes after the season 2 update without my PC restarting.

Ryzen 5700

Rx 7900xt

32gb ram.

No issues with other games

Same here , crashes either while loading or 2min into it before even a match starting… ever since new season…. Everything worked fine 3 days ago for me

7800x3D

7900xtx

32Gig Gskill 6000mhz

Yup, me as well. Game is completely unplayable. I have had it force reboot my laptop five times today, and I never had this problem once prior to season 2. Every other game runs fine, never seen anything like this. Definitely a game issue, as these reports have been propping up since season 2 launched.

I just uninstalled it for now. Really don't want to have to reinstall Windows just in hopes that it will work. I might try and reinstall it later just to see if maybe that helps. I also ran DDU and did a fresh driver install for the graphics card but that didn't do anything for it.
