Hello,
For the past few years I've been having issues with my graphics card, specifically AMD Radeon R7 M340, and its been getting in the way of gaming, work, and really anything graphics related. I've tried so many things that I just gave up on this thing at one point, here's a list of things I've tried so far:
- Reinstalling drivers (AMD Radeon Software 22.6.1)
- Reinstalling Windows
- Overclocking
- Underclocking
- Tweaking Radeon Software settings
- Installing chipset drivers
- Tweaking Windows settings
- Using Linux
And out of all these things only 2 worked, using Linux and changing one setting in Windows.
Using Linux I've had no issues with crashing, I could play games and use any program that utilized the R7 graphics card. Only issue being that Linux isn't a stable system and I've had issues with it that I simply never had in Windows, so I'm not going back to Linux.
The "solution" with Windows was changing a setting in power options in advanced settings and under "Switchable Dynamic Graphics" and changing it to "Force power-saving graphics", this worked because it put all of the work towards my other integrated GPU (AMD Radeon R5 Graphics) but it wasn't all-proof, since when I run a Vulkan application or a DirectX12 application the R7 graphics would be utilized instead and it would end up crashing after some time.
I have no idea what caused the system to start crashing. When I got this laptop new it had no issues at all, one day it just started doing it.
Only clue I get when it crashes is in Event Viewer, where it logs a warning: "Display driver amdkmdag stopped responding and has successfully recovered." which is not helpful to me at all.
I think the driver is at fault. In Linux ,as I said before, I had no issues running games and utilizing the R7 GPU, and now in Windows I'm having issues again.
Below are attached my GPUs specs and a video showcasing the crash when the R7 GPU is being utilized:
In the video I'm playing Euro Truck Simulator 2 and the text in the upper left corner is MSI Afterburner displaying some performance stats
If there is something you would like to know that I haven't mentioned please let me know.
