Intermittent Crashing (Under Load and Idle)

Symptoms:

My brand-new system will intermittently freeze for approximately 1-2 minutes, crash to black screen and immediately reboot (similar to an AC power fail). This happens occasionally under load in different games (Rust, Path of Exile, CounterStrike 2, and others), while web browsing, or while completely idle. Sometimes crashes are 5 minutes apart from eachother, sometimes days apart.

Troubleshooting steps taken so far:

Memtest86 was run for ~ 10 hours, multiple passes, no fails.

FurMark tests, both CPU and GPU-intensive tests, do not seem to accelerate the instance of crashes.

Reinstalled windows 11: No effect

Disabled Global C-States, PBO, adjusted curves, disabled iGPU, removed 3d-vCache and PPU Provisioning drivers based on online forum troubleshooting steps: No effect (reinstalled/reverted settings afterward)

Disabled/Enabled A-XMP

Updated BIOS, Chipset drivers, sound card drivers. DDU reinstalled audio/gfx drivers.

Removed all USB devices except mouse/keyboard

Removed all but one monitor, tried different monitors.

Tested with another power supply from previous system of the same wattage: No effect

Temps never seem to increase above ~60C even under high load; I have a lot of cooling in place and I don't believe its a thermal issue.

I am really at my wits end with this. I thought I knew how to troubleshoot issues like this but I do not think I do. I would try to test it in safe mode, but that would require leaving it overnight due to how intermittent it is, and I'm not sure how I'd detect a crash like this in safe mode while I'm asleep. I would RMA but I don't even know which part to RMA!

Occasionally, instead of crashing to reboot instantly, an ntoskrnl.exe BSOD will show up, minidumps do not add any additional info but I can link them if necessary. I'm not even 100% certain these BSODs are related to my main issue.

CURRENT SYSTEM CONFIGURATION:

OS: Win 11
Motherboard: MSI Pro B650P-Wifi
PSU: Corsair RM850x - 850w
CPU: Ryzen 7 7800x3D w/ ARCTIC 420mm Radiator
RAM: Corsair VENGEANCE DDR5 2x32GB Kit 5200MHz
GPU: MSI Gaming RTX 4070 Super 12GB Ventus 3-Fan
SSD: Intel 750-Series 500GB PCIe SSD (NOT M.2 - PCIe slot SSD)

Hello! So I am copy and pasting my fix into the replies of people who are experiencing similar problems to what I had.

If you're experiencing GPU issues, try these steps:

  • Check for Overclocking:

    • Disable any overclocking in AMD’s Adrenalin software or third-party tools.
    • Ensure your GPU operates within the manufacturer’s standard frequency range. For the ASRock AMD Radeon RX 7900 XTX, I found that lowering the frequency to 2500 MHz resolved my crashes. If you have a different GPU model, check the AMD reference boost MHz for your specific card.
  • Consider Third-Party Manufacturing:

    • I don’t think driver issues are the problem; instead, third-party manufacturers might accidentally boost GPU frequencies too high, causing instability.
  • My Experience:

    • I had crashes during demanding games like Star Citizen and MW2, where monitors lost connection, requiring a PSU reset to reboot.
    • Upgrading from a Corsair RM850e to an NZXT C1200 Gold did not resolve the issue.
    • Reducing the GPU frequency to 2500 MHz (for my RX 7900 XTX) stopped the crashes entirely.

Following these steps may help with GPU stability issues. If you need more help, feel free to reach out!
