Is RAM shared between the CPU and GPU?

I have just bought an Asus Laptop equipped with an AMD Ryzen 5 3500U CPU and an AMD Radeon Vega 8 GPU.

My Laptop is running Windows 10 64 bits. It has 8 Mb DDR4 RAM installed but only 5,95 Mb RAM usable according to the System Info Windows menu.

I tried unsuccessfully several tips to increase the amount of RAM usable (msconfig).

I wonder if the GPU uses some of the installed RAM and if it could explain why the CPU cannot use all the installed RAM.

The BIOS is American Megatrends version 302. There is no memory-related parameter in the BIOS.

Hi,

AMD Ryzen 5 3500u is an APU
you dont have a discrete GPU = your RAM is used by APU (CPU part + iGPU part)

i highly recommend to use 16GB DDR4-2400 in 2 dimms (2x 8GB) for your APU to ensure you have good FPS in Games

PC: R7 2700X @PBO + RX 580 4G (1500MHz/2000MHz CL16) + 32G DDR4-3200CL14 + 144hz 1ms FS P + 75hz 1ms FS
Laptop: R5 2500U @30W + RX 560X (1400MHz/1500MHz) + 16G DDR4-2400CL16 + 120Hz 3ms FS

Just to build off this response.  APUs do share memory between CPU and GPU but tend to gain more performance with faster RAM.

I would go 16GB for sure, but the higher the speed, the better off you'll be.

this is a laptop so i think he is limited to DDR4-2400 or DDR4-2666
