I don't know if this is well know, but for me it was new, even when it's from 2013.
I stumbled over this video on youtube and i think, this approach is worth sharing as an idea.
Thanks by the way for the RPR roadmap. RPR 2 looks very promising!

It is known . There are various algorithms for dealing with complex light paths in rendering. SPPM, VCM (or bidirectional path tracing) as well as path guiding. We're looking at ways to handle these types of light paths better in RPR 2.0!
How could i even doubt this...
