It’s true; I’d be lost without my notebook. When I’m bored, the first thing I do is turn it on and look for content to absorb. Sorry big screen TV, not you today.


The truth of the matter is I usually want to use my big screen TV in combination with my notebook/tablet. I just don’t like dealing with cables running from my notebook to my TV.


If only there was a simpler solution.




What is AMD Wireless Display?

No one really likes wires, but if you want to connect your notebook to your TV you typically need to be tethered down with a video cable.


Wireless display solutions remove the need for a physical cable. This can be accomplished with a compatible wireless display receiver connected to your existing TV.




Or your TV may already have wireless display support built in.



If you want to try AMD Wireless Display technology out for yourself you’ll need:

  1. Notebook/Tablet/PC with AMD Wireless Display technology
  2. A compatible wireless display receiver (connected to a TV/display) or a TV with a compatible built-in wireless display receiver

Here’s some hardware that can get you started on a wireless display setup.



How it works.

The following is based on the Windows 8.1 Preview; this may be subject to change upon release of the final build


Windows 8.1 makes for connecting a Wireless Display as simple as a couple clicks on the mouse (or taps on the screen). Assuming you have all the right hardware (& drivers) let’s quickly step through getting you up and running.

The Charms tool in Windows 8.1 allows you to control features such as Wireless Display. Charms can be invoked by:

  • Touch: Swiping in from the right edge of the screen
  • Keyboard Shortcut: Windows Key + C
  • Mouse: By moving the mouse to the top-right or bottom-right corner of the screen


The first time you connect to a wireless display device you’ll need to add it as an available display.

If the “Add Display” option isn’t available then you’ll need to check with your system manufacturer to see if your notebook device is capable of wireless display.



The initialization process is only necessary the first time you connect to a wireless display receiver. All subsequent connections can be established through the Charms tool or keyboard shortcuts. The wireless display can be configured in “duplicate” or “extend” mode. Just like any normal external display.

The keyboard shortcuts Windows Key + K and Windows Key + P allow quick access to the connect/configure options for wireless display.
