AMD 9800X3D half tread usage

Hello everyone,

I built my new PC over the weekend, upgrading from an i7-7700K to the new 9800X3D.

I haven't noticed anything unusual until today when I checked Task Manager. It was using all 8 cores, but only half the threads (8 of 16).

I tried the msconfig method to enable and disable the number of processors and rebooted, but it didn’t help.

My BIOS and drivers are up to date as of today (December 8th).

Is there a setting that I need to enable or configure?

Here are my system specs:

  • Windows 11 Home 24H2 (up to date)
  • MSI MAG X670 Tomahawk (BIOS version: 7E51v1A1A [Beta version])
  • M.2 4TB Gen 4 (boot drive + programs)
  • G.Skill 32GB DDR5 6000MHz RAM
  • MSI RTX 3080 12gb

BIOS settings:

  • PBO: Auto
  • Expo1 profile (6000MHz)
  • X3D gaming mode enabled

Everything else is set to default.

apparently it was the X3D mode in the BIOS. probably does the same as SMT.
