I have a very serious problem with how Global Overdrive manages my GPU's fan speed.

As the title states, my Radeon settings do not persist after updates from Windows. I have had 2 of those in the past 2 days each followed by a crash the next time I try to use the system.

Is there something wrong with the way my drivers are installed or configured or is there an avenue for people who need to -ensure- 100% fan speed at all times?

There's been more crashing due to no fans today, during disk operations.

My C:/ drive is at this point very inconsistent. This is my work station and it is un-usable until I put significant money and time into it.

Put yourself in my shoes and imagine how I feel about this.

Yes I have drivers for my graphics card. Its not software made by MSI like afterburner.

is your GPU-Bios modified? or are you willing to modify your bios?

To give benman's question a proper response, no I don't use Afterburner (which I thought looked like one of MSI's version of the drivers or an alternative) or Fraps/OBS/XSplit at the moment.

I am looking into any possible fix for this so thank you for bringing up BIOS modification. It seems like it would be a step further than what I need to do but so far it's the only lead.

You may want to think about disabling driver updates from windows updates.

Not sure what you mean by C drive inconsistent (maybe need to scan for bad sectors ?).

There's been a number of power outages on top of the three crashes after window's "Fall creator update" some of which I did pull the plug on so I shouldn't complain.

So now, most of the time, when I try to access Explorer from the task bar it will take like 10 sec to work (although from folders on the desktop it's fine...), deleting something will take like 10 sec as well and trying to open the start menu from the task bar doesn't work at all unless I leave for 20 min.

On some boots, though, everything is fine. Like one out of three times, I just have to reboot if it isn't.

It sounds like the issues I'm having aren't about the drive being brought to a crawl by physical damages to it but by a byproduct of the "Win10 Fall Creators Update" or, from what I understand, the new version of it. My start menu is still broken most of the time though, the fix in the article above is not definitive.

Here's a screenshot of my fan speed in Wattman and it does illustrate the issue:

The first part is me opening up the application and seeing that the setting is back on "auto" and then the graph peaks up when the fans are going at 100% where I'm most comfortable having them.

It does seem there are significant issues with a recent Windows update on my system. I'm going to attempt untangling those first as they seem to be causing me and my PC a great deal of confusion.

I know a lot of the members here advocate using wattman and it's fan control.. Not me.

I use MSI Afterburner for my RX580 and used it for R9 290x and 5870 and I even use it for my APU system.

If you want to use it, open radeon settings and on the home page at the bottom, click on preferences and then RESTORE Factory defaults. That will get rid of wattman.

Install Afterburner, set a fan curve and forget.  Ok oK, not quite that simple but spend some time fiddling with afterburner and you'll figure it out.
