Hi guys. a strange thing happened to me. I have consisting of Ryzen 3600x, Asus Rog Strix b450 gaming E mobo.
I am used to charge my phone wih usb cable connected to the usb (3.0) port on my pc. i know that usb 3 can deliver only 0.9Amps at 5V but it was always sufficient for charging (even if it was slow) and it worked whether pc was turned on or off. AND i was using windows 10. - everything worked fine.
BUT I updated the windows to Widows 11 and problems appeared. When I connected my phone to the usb cable - it started normally - phone recognized that it is charging. But the phone wasnt charging at all. Even more it was draining its battery. It somehow works only if pc is turned on, but not when it is turned off.
Than I rerolled back to Windows 10 and everything is working fine again.
The strangest thing is, when I started digging a bit..I checked chipset drivers and I found out that AMD USB filter driver in "NOT APPLICABLE" in Windows 11 in chipset driver package (and Yes I have the newest one installed).
So I think this is the case...because USB filter drivers are the drivers that recognize device that needs charging...or something like that
What is going on with Windows 11 and Why is the driver NOT APPLICABLE for it?
Maybe the issue is elsewhere..but this seems to be the only logical reason.
Can someone from AMD driver developers answer me??
(sorry for my english..I am not native)
Are you using your Motherboard's USB-C port to charge your cellphone or a regular USB 3.1 port?
Here is your motherboard's USB Specs:
AMD® B450 chipset
- 2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports (2 ports at back panel [red])
- 6 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (4 ports at back panel [3 x Type-A and 1 x
Type-C™], 2 ports at mid-board)
- 4 x USB 2.0 ports ( 2 ports at back panel, 2 ports at mid-board)
Your Motherboard's Back I/O Ports:
1 x PS/2 Keyboard/Mouse Combo port
1 x HDMI 2.0b port
1 x DisplayPort
2 x USB 3.1 Gen 2 ports (2 x Type-A [red] )
4 x USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports (3 x Type-A [blue] and 1 x Type-C™)
2 x USB 2.0 ports
1 x Anti-surge LAN (RJ45) port
1 x Optical S/PDIF out
5 x Audio jacks
The USB-C is the port you should be using to charge your Cellphone with if that isn't the USB Port that you are using.
According to Asus Special Feature it includes a feature where you can use any USB port as a charging port called AI Charging:
Your Motherboard's Application DVD should have AI Charger app on it or you can download it from Asus itself: https://event.asus.com/mb/2010/ai_charger/
Hey, thanks for the reply, but the thing is..I am using front panel USB BUT it works with windows 10 alright. I even used front panel audio with my old intel 4790k system..for years..and it worked.
AI charger is utility that works with Apple devices only - specifically the app only recognizes apple products..and I have an android device.
This is not like I am trying to figure out which port to use. Only that windows 11 installation made the front usb charging not working (and believe me it worked and I used it on 2 different pcs with windows 10 for 6 years) So it is software related somehow...
You are correct about AI Charger and didn't catch that part. But I did read that it might work on some Non-Apple devices though.
From your original reply the Front USB Ports does charge your cellphone but only when you are in Windows correct when using Windows 11 OS?
Which seems to indicate that the Front USB ports only has power when the Windows USB driver is loaded.
From what I read the USB Ports when the computer is turned off should still provide power but not data to the USB ports.
According to your motherboard Manual the Front Ports are connected to the motherboard from these ports:
Found this Windows tech site about when the Front Panel USB ports stop working or not working correctly: https://windowsreport.com/front-usb-port-not-working/
The front USB ports not working Windows can occur for the reasons listed below.
These factors vary depending on the situation and your devices. Regardless, we’ll guide you through how to get your USB ports working again.
It mentions several troubleshooting tips on how to update your Windows USB Driver, using Device Manager, and other tips.
This other tech site gives very similar Troubleshooting tips including BIOS and Device Manager and Power plans settings concerning the Front Panel USB ports: https://www.cgdirector.com/fix-front-usb-ports-on-your-pc/
Thanks, yes those are basic steps to take, but I am still firmly convinced, that the issue is with windows 11 itself - because amd usb filter drivers are not applicable, so windows 11 has its own usb filter driver. And those doesnt work as they should..or they work somewhat different.
I still want to know WHY USB filter is "not applicable" in windows 11 and what does that mean?
Windows 10 works flawlessly, so it is not a hardware or connection issue.
In windows 11 i updated all I could..even tried that Ai charger but it didnt work.
