24.6.1 introduced a coil whine

I own a Sapphire RX 7600 Pulse, and after updating to 24.6.1 driver version, I started hearing a coil whine. This is happening even when I am just browsing in my browser (Google Chrome). Of course, you can also hear that during playing games.

The GPU usage mostly sits at 1% to 2%, while running just a browser, so it's not even busy, however, I have noticed to compared to the previous version, It's using 10W more.

I have downgraded to 24.5.1 and the problem seems to be gone, it's using less W and the Memory temps seems to be a bit lower.

I also saw on reddit, that I am not the only one with this issue on this specific driver....

try to undervolt your video card, this usually helps to reduce coil whine.

I'm experiencing coil whine on my desktop, idle, moving windows around, and scrolling my browser.

Downgraded to 24.5.1 and it goes away and I can live in silence again.

AMD please fix.

Same here with a stock clocked RX 6700 XT... It was never a coil whine free card, but only in some gaming scenarios, but with 24.6.1 it went crazy... I care less about coil whine if it happens while gaming, since I use a headset, but in Windows, while browsing the internet, it is unacceptable... As more people suggested it, reverting to 24.5.1 completely solved the issue. Please fix this in the next driver release!

Same here, I have RX 6600 XT and my card had a little coil whine depending on the game but it was negligible. And now (on 24.6.1 driver) while browsing, this sound killing me.

Thank you so much for posting this bro. This happened to me as well, I have a rx 6700, I have no issues with it but after this update things went downhill. Buzzing while playing games, I even get frame drops consistent with the buzzing sound. When the buzzing stops my fps dips for a few seconds. I really hope AMD fixed this because it’s really annoying.

The issue is still there in 24.7.1...

Still happening on 24.8.1...

This is so annoying.. I can't believe this issue keeps on going for 3 versions.

I reported it via the feedback button, I hope anyone who sees this will as well.

The problem is quite easy to detect and noticeable between May and later driver versions. Actually, it wasn't good in the May driver either, but it didn't cause any problems in the browser. In the case of the May driver, it produced the buzz sound in windowed mode, but in full screen mode it stopped, then the game loaded, buzz sound again, change to windowed mode and back again full screen and okay again.. If you have d3d video player, you can start it and change it to fullscreen mode instead of the game and it solves the buzz sound problem of the game in the same way. This is a very strange thing. But the only way to get rid of the buzz sound problem in the new drivers is to reduce the GPU core frequency

Hmmm... You experienced higher than before GPU core frequency since 24.5.1? I'll check mine...

24.8.1. checked. My 6700 XT's GPU clock doesn't gets higher than ~100 MHz while scrolling in Chrome, and producing that awful coil whine... Maybe 24.9.1... But something tells me I will stick with 24.5.1 for a while.

24.9.1: issue still there...

Seems like this isn't going to be fixed anytime soon, if it was at least on the known issues list, then maybe...

this is so extremely annoying.. to be stuck on a version because no one cares about the issues that affects a few select GPUs..

I guess the number of affected cards might be too low, not even sure AMD is aware of it, or cares.

My guess is that this is as simple as a "Hardware acceleration" feature that is enabled across OS on the driver since 24.6.1 - I bet if an AMD engineer knew what was changed in 24.6.1 it would make all sense to him.

Maybe this hardware acceleration is running in such a low-power mode that it rubs certain GPUs the wrong way and makes it whine. All speculation, but a good guess..

I just quickly checked the release notes of 24.6.1. nothing stands out to me as such, maybe "Support for Windows 11, version 24H2", because 24H2 will demand such behaviour?
