Battlefield 2042 Direct X Driver Crashes

Is anyone else having Direct X crashes in BF2042. I have a Radeon VII so it has DX12 support. I'm playing at 1440p High 144hz.

My drivers are updated and i had originally DDU the drivers during the beta and tried updating DX12 and i removed my undervolt and left the GPU at stock settings, even saw somewhere that increasing power draw might help, so i had +20 power draw and ramped my fans up to keep up with the temps and was able to play a lil bit longer than normal until Crash #2 happened.

This was the first crash i was getting during beta and during early access last night on release.

DirectX function "GetDeviceRemovedReason" failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG (*The GPU will not respond to more commands"). GPU: "AMD Radeon VII", Driver 21.11.2  (21.30.33.05-211110a-373547E-RadeonSoftware). This error is usually caused by the graphics driver crashing, try installing the latest drivers

This was the second crash after trying power draw increase and ramped up the fans

DirectX function *m_devicePlat-> CreateCommittedResource(&heapProps, D3D12__HEAP_NONE, &platDesc, creationState, clearValuePtr, __uuldof(**(&resource)), IID_PPV_ARGS_Helper(&resource))* failed with DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_REMOVED ("The video card has been physically removed from the system., or a driver upgrade for the video card has occurred. "). GPU: "AMD Radeon VII", Driver 21.11.2 (21.30.33.05-211110a-373547E-RadeonSoftware). D:\dev\TnT\LocalPackages\RenderCore2\2.04.300-ks\source4\platform\Dx12\ResourceBuilderDx12.cpp. This error is usually caused by the graphics driver crashing, try installing the latest drivers.DeviceRemovedReason: DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG ("The GPU will not respond to more commands"),

Not really sure what is going on, I've tried all sorts of fixes that people had luck with during the beta when this was happening but a lot of them were on cards that were older and didn't support the correct DX12 version.

This is my system specs if that helps. I don't overclock, i only ever undervolt the gpu for cooler temps but i took that off when i started having problems with this game.

Hey Mircrospawn,

Unfortunately, I have similar problems. The game crashes in Hazard and Warfare mode and is not playable (Dxgi_error_device_removed). The only mode which is working without crashes is the portal mode.

My setup:

- fresh installed windows 11
- Radeon stock stable drivers / Radeon beta drivers from 10.11.2021
- AMD Radeon VII (undervolted and stock settings)
- AMD Ryzen 5800x
- MSI MPG X570 Edge Wifi
- GSkill Trident 2x16 GB RAM 3600
- Thermaltake Smart SE 750W

I had the same sporadic issues with the beta. Was not able to solve it.

Same here. RX 6800 XT. Game crashes with driver timeout and direct x error. They even published a new driver for this game and it's just a crashfest. I hope the devs fix it soon. I'm just lucky I haven't bought the game yet since I'm trying it with the 10 hours trial. I'm not going to play it again until a new update comes from AMD or Dice.

Im having the same problem as the OP, it happened twice, the game locked up twice on El Alamein. I also noticed the profile isn't picked up by the driver, doing a scan does nothing.

I have the same build no problems here strange.

I'm also on windows 11 if that matters

Also have this problem.

Battlefield 3 Portal works fine, As soon as I attempt to spawn in Bad Company 2 Portal the screen freezes and I get the same directx error as those of you in this thread and also a driver timeout pop up.

Same issue here, I have installed a couple driver versions now and no change.

I have turned off my overclock and no change.

The game starts, it loads up the map as though I am about to choose a spawn and then it crashes.  Every single time.

Same for me. 5800X, sapphire Nitro+ RX 6900XT, 32 GB RAM. Was going to try without my OC. I'm rolling back to 21.10.2. The only mode that works for me is Portal like you guys. My system RAM also slowly creeps up in all out warfare mode until it's over 24GB and unplayable, stuttering and hitching like crazy. Must be a game issue?

Guess we all wait for fixes.

For the record, everything else plays flawlessly.

I have the same errors, followed with a few more different ones when spawning into a map from top side, it will just freeze and bring up errors.

Same as OP, I even went as far as a fresh install of windows and drivers to no avail.

Is the roll back useful to fix it? I didn't try it yet.

i rolled back to 2.10 and it would still crash with directx errors. My friend is on 2.08 or something and hes alright at the moment

I was just trying to play Battlefield 2042, limited to 3 days, with an RX5700XT, but it crashed while loading after calibrating. It wasn't a WattMan error, it is probably the graphics engine of the game, so it was uninstalled again. My Forza Horizon 5, on the other hand, runs without any problems. I won't buy ...

Ah, so they're looking for for more players to give feedback.

I might give it a go (bf3/4/1/5 run reasonably well).

so the odd thing is i get this same issue but only on the portal part of the game. normal conquest or breakthrough run for hours just fine but portal will crash with the same as OP's DX error.

i don't really understand why my GPU is running the game at 99% utilisation and 2500mhz avg but power draw is only about 190w and fps is around 90-115fps. i dont understand why it isnt hitting the 281w max on the bios and pushing out more frames when my CPU is only 60% utilised and not maxing out my ram etc.

what's with the low power draw? this only happened on bf2042 and bf5 and games that obviously dont need a 6900xt (league of legends, oxygen not included, prison architect etc)

Was even worse on 21.10.2. Like others have said, I definitely think it's a game issue.

I am having the same issue. However I do notice that the clock speed is very unstable while I game. Sometimes it dorps to 0 and picks back up soon. I think that could have caused this crash. I followed the instruction online, disabled the OC settings but that still happen. Then I notice that if I switch out of the game, the clock speed will drop. I am running a dual monitor and I usually open browser on the seccondary monitor. I closed the browser window and keep the OC setting off and felt the game is much more stable afterwards. Hope this helpful.

Yep same problem here. My guess is it's the game causing the issue not necessarily the AMD driver. Had the same issue multiple times with COD Cold War Zombies months ago, again was the game, not the driver. Add it to the list of 2042 fixes that need to happen...

Yeah I suspect that the game is not recognized, so the graphic card sometimes goes idle.  I just mannully add it in the AMD radeon software. Hope that also helps lol

i tried 21.8.2 and still got the crash after about an hour of gameplay

I also downgraded to 21.8.2 but alas it did not help. The game crashes after some time.
Even enabling DX12 mode in the settings (%USERPROFILE%\OneDrive\Documents\Battlefield 2042\settings\PROFSAVE_PROFILE, GstRender.Dx12Enabled 1) or switching to borderless does not help The game crashes..

But what's funny: Only when the following specialist appears, the game crashes... Coincidence? So happened this time during the "best players screen" after the game was over...

I guess its clearly a game issue, not a driver one.

Facing the same issue for the last 3 days even my os is updated as well as the drivers are. Tried a couple of solutions but got no results.

My drivers have been updated and I actually DDU the drivers during the beta and tried to update the DX12 and I removed my under volt and left the GPU on the stock settings, here Somewhere I saw that increasing the power draw could help, so I did +20 power draw and ramp-up. The fans were ready to save time and play a little longer than usual until Crash # 2.

The error is :

Please release the new update and fix it as soon as possible.

Thanks

I hope a new version of the graphics card driver will be released as soon as possible.

21.11.2 and 21.10.2

Both driver versions will cause the game to crash and the graphics card driver to restart.

The crash occurred not only in Battlefield 2042, but also in Cyberpunk 2077 and Assassin Creed Odyssey.

So this is not the problem of the game itself, but the problem of two versions of graphics card drivers. No matter which version of the driver, similar problems will occur. After entering the game for a period of time, the game suddenly goes black, and then the graphics card driver crashes and restarts.

Personally, I think the best solution before the emergence of a new and stable graphics card driver version is to go back to the driver version before 21.10.2.

I've had this issue for a few months now on FIFA21 and then when I got FIFA22 too.

I've upgraded from Rx580 to Rx6900xt. Ryzen 3600 to Ryzen 5600x, upgraded my PSU, replaced ram modules. Haven't swapped the motherboard yet, but have a high-end x570 and don't want to go down that path yet.

Clean Windows install, added the registry keys, underclocked my GPU, turned graphics settings down to the minimum, played windowed, full screen. Even swapped to high-quality HDMI cables. Up to date drivers, directX12.

All this to no avail. The first day of BF2041, ran fine, do dramas, but on the second day, it all went south. Since then, I'm lucky to get through a round.

I suspect it's a driver issue. My drivers are up to date but I used to find that certain driver updates were more stable than others with FIFA. It's the only thing that seems to have any benefit. In the end, this is really ruining my gaming experience.

Hello together,

a lot of people are experiencing this type of driver crash, especially Battlefield 2042 players with a Radeon VII (others too).

Inside EAs Answers HQ we created a similar Topic with the exact same Driver errors. It seems like it has something to do with the specialist "Sundance" and a specific type of Hair Shader. Unfortunately, there is no Fix for this issue so far.

What people have tried (didn't work):

  • DDU
  • Old & New Driver Versions
  • Over & Undervolting
  • Lock their GPU speed
  • New Windows Installation

To get things going, it's important that AMD is investigating this problem too. Maybe there is an even bigger issue hidden under the surface of specific Hardware combinations.

At this Point it seems like EA is monitoring this issue, we just got feedback from 2 "Supporters" which said they will look this up for us with the notice that there is a game ready driver to be announced today.

Check out the Topic on EAs Answers HQ:

https://answers.ea.com/t5/Technical-Issues/Radeon-VII-game-crashes-when-Sundance-specialist-is-on-th...

I found that this kind of problem appears on win11 system, but it does not appear on win10 system. I rolled back a series of problems from win11 to win10, which did not happen again. My current version of the graphics card driver is 21.10.1

Sorry, that's not Correct!! It appears on WIN11 and WIN10 Systems.

I have tested it and installed Win10 from scratch and Win11 from scratch and error continues.

hi

My steps maybe work.  Set Gpu frequency run in 49% in AMD Driver.

My PC run 2024 in 4K , graphic quality set auto to good, and fps is about 90.

Thanks for the post and reports, we are looking into this issue.

If you would like to provide us with additiona information or reproduction steps, please file a bug report using the interal Bug Report Tool found within Radeon Software. https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/faq/amdbrt

Same problem Direct X error, less crashes with new driver but did not solve the problem.

Driver: 21.11.3
GPU: 6800 XT Midnight edition, CPU: Ryzen 9 5900x and Windows 11

@Matt_AMD hello there. Are there any news on fix from AMD side?

We addressed a crashing issue with the 21.11.3 driver. I would recommend waiting for additional game updates to see if that fixes any other issues remaining.

@Matt_AMD  Just for the record it did not help with Sundance hair crash and game still crashing with Radeon VII as soon as this character appears on the screen. No nVidia GPU crashed because of that. Should we (Radeon VII owners) expect another fix on driver level?

Latest Driver and I could be able to capture the error this time

We are also looking at this issue with the Sundance and Radeon VII.

just a heads up unrelated to sundance but still on the radeon vii - disabling hardware acceleration in firefox and discord (or having the apps closed) fixed my random crashes in bf2042
