17.12.2 crashes - "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered"

Experiencing frequent crashes (>1 per minute) with latest 17.12.2 Adrenalin drivers.  System is a Dell OptiPlex 990 with RX 550, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit.  System was previously stable using 17.11.2 drivers.  Error message from event log states "Display driver amdkmdap stopped responding and has successfully recovered."  Tried using the AMD Cleanup Utility to completely remove old drivers and reinstalled 17.12.2 and had the same issue.

Rolling back to 17.11.4 now for testing, appears to only crash on the newer "Adrenalin" versions -- older "Crimson" versions work fine.  From reading other forums I believe it has to do with the way the new drivers adjust power settings on the card.  Any suggestions?

 

Side note: as a SysAdmin I manage over 30 PC's that have R7 250 graphics cards.  So far no issues with them and the 17.12.2 drivers.  Issue appears to only affect the higher-end RX-series cards?
