I have an R9 290X that causes a black screen freeze if I run it at the stock 1250MHz memory setting. I've read this is very common with this GPU and I am not here to troubleshoot it. I spent the better part of a month trying everything and stumbled upon a thread at reddit that suggested downclocking the memory. I dropped it to 1230MHz and just like magic I went from a lock up every 1-2 hours to never. This was a few years ago and I already RMA'd the card once.
Recently, when I upgraded my drivers to 17.2.2, MSI afterburner no longer allowed me to adjust the card settings and I was stuck running at stock settings again. I was furious since my computer froze every hour or so for 4 days in a row until MSI added a work around to afterburner which then allowed me access to the GPU settings to down clock the memory once again. That was only a few weeks ago and I have not had a single freeze. I noticed that there is a newer driver available and I am leary about installing it since the last driver locked me out of the GPU settings using anything but wattman which DOES NOT allow you to downclock.
