office 2016 screen redraw

Question asked by bzargari on Sep 1, 2017

I have a new issue with only Microsoft Office 2016 on two separate Dell PCs both having AMD Radeon type of graphics chipsets/cards and running Windows 7. These same machines did not have a problem with Office 2007. The desktop has a Radeon HD7570 and the laptop has the R5 M335. The issue I observe consistently is that in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, the screen redraws automatically every 3 to 4 seconds, thus escaping out of any pop-up menus (right mouse click pop-ups) which I'm trying to select. You can actually see the screen flash/flicker periodically. My two other PCs also running Windows 7, one Dell desktop and one Dell laptops, both of which are older and do not use AMD Radeon graphics, have no such issues. Just doing a web search, other people also have this same issue, so I'm not alone. None of the suggestions on the web (updating video drivers, unclicking "use hardware acceleration" option in Office, or reinstalling office 2016) have fixed the issue. There were some other more invasive registry modifications which I have not dared to try.
