Unreal Engine 4 games - crash with RX580

Question asked by anthropolyte on Aug 15, 2017

Hi all,

I have done a lot of searching for this issue but have found little information, so I'm hoping someone may be able to help me!

I have a new rig with a Gigabyte Aorus XTR RX580. It's been rock solid since built, but it seems that all Unreal Engine 4 games I've tried running on it crash, in one way or another. Most of these are admittedly early access or demos, but it's unusual that only UE4 games cause a problem - all others, on other engines, run fine, and on Ultrahigh settings.

The only thing I've found that helps is reducing the quality of shadows in the game settings. This allows the game to run, but I can't help feeling that I should be able to run the card at much higher settings.

Thus far I have tried uninstalling the drivers with DDU and installing various versions of Crimson, with no change; have run a full image cleanup of Windows 10; have uninstalled and reinstalled the games several times, checking file integrity via Steam; and have disabled antivirus and firewall. Nothing has helped thus far.

Does anyone know if this is a widespread issue? Is a fix on the way either from Unreal or from AMD? Any other suggestions on what to try?

For info, full rig details:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600X (stock clock)

Gigabyte Aorus XTR RX580 (stock clock)

Gigabyte Gaming 3 AB350

16GB G.Skill Ripjaws V CL14 running at 3200MHz

Thanks for your time!
