R9 280 Crashes After Definition Update for Windows Defender

    shwartz01

      Hi All,

I'm a newbie trying to flesh out this problem on my first build.  In short, I'll be working on my computer and suddenly the screen will go blank.  Keyboard commands are not recognized although music will still be playing through my headphones.  The only way that I can get the screen back up is a hard reset.  After having this happen one a weekly (sometimes daily) basis, I think I've identified the possible cause; roughly 5-10 minutes after the crash a Definition Update for Windows Defender is installed (per the reliability monitor).  I suspect what is happening is that the update is being installed in the background, crashes my card, and then successfully installs after the restart.

      I have

      1) adjusted the TDR delay setting to 8 seconds

      2) run sfc.exe/scannow (no errors)

      3) run memtest86+ (no errors)

      PC configuration:

      Desktop

      Windows 10 Pro (64 bit)

      Asus Z97 Mobo

      Intel i5-4690

      Crimson Relive 17.1.1

      32 GB G.Skill Trident X (DDR3 1600)

      XFX Double D AMD Radeon R9 280

      Thermaltake Toughpower Gold 750W

ViewSonic VX2250 & HPLV 2311 monitors (attached via DVI)

(6 case fans + CPU fan)

      Default display settings.

Thanks in advance for the help!
