Wolfenstein new order crashes at chapter 4 Eisenheim prison.

    williamgaatjes

Hi, i hope you can help me out.

      I bought a gigabyte RX480 g1 gaming card in december 2016.

And it works well. I have installed various games (dx8 up to recent vulcan based game) and benchmarks programs and no crashes or any issues.

Well, except one crash at doom 2016 at the end. But that is it.

But yesterday i have bought the game wolfenstein new order from steam. And i have exactly the same problems many owners with a RX470 or RX480 card have reported in the steam community.

      See link :

Wolfenstein The New Order Eisenwald Prison crash. :: Wolfenstein: The New Order General Discussions

I have been playing the game for several hours without any issue. But it seems there is something in the game that crashes the game and /or the gpu crimson program.

This happens in the Eisenheim prison chapter (chapter 4) of the game, the game constantly crashes and i noticed the radeon crimson settings program crashes as well. I have to restart my pc to get radeon settings functional again.

The crash seems to happen mostly when the chains in the game become visible or other objects with a metal shine and that flash on and off (to emphasize that it is an object for the user to interact with) . Unfortunately, these chains play a vital role in the chapter. They must all be cut with a torch. And as soon as these objects come into the field of view. After a few seconds the game crashes often taking down the radeon settings program as well. I am not sure if the gpu driver crashes because the image does not go to black. The game just freezes and crashes.

I have tried turning all settings on and off in the game and all radeon settings for this specific game. Lowered the resolution. But to no prevail.

I read on the steam community that some have tried to rename the executable, which i can only imagine results in that the driver does not recognize the game and does not load specific optimizations for the game. I have come to understand that this is often the case to get games up and running for all pc based gpu manufacturers .

I can not try if this renaming fix mention in the steam community works since steam constantly verifies the files of the installed steam games.  And thus refuses the game to run when renamed. Which for game integrity i can imagine.

The game runs with the idtech 5 engine on opengl.

I should note, before the dreaded chapter 4, i had the game running on high settings with triple buffering enabled in the radeon settings. And at a resolution of 1920*1080p. vsync on. The game usually stayed at a stable 60fps with occasional dips to 45fps at wide open fields with busy scenery. But the image was fluid. No tearing, no artefacting, no stuttering. The game ran fine until chapter 4.

I did a steam file  integrity check as well and all files check out according to the steam program.

I usually have the gpu running at a max boost clock of 10% lower than factory setting. Max temp control at 77C. And lowered voltage to max 1050mV. Never had any crashes.

To make sure this can not be it, i set all settings to the default settings in wattman. The issue remains with the gpu on default wattman settings.

I hope you can help us sad rx480 owners who really like to play wolfenstein new order.

      Thank you in advance.

      William.

Hi, i had recently a crash again when in another chapter again a chain appeared.

The game dumps a log file and when the game shuts down correctly i get this text :

          Purging Overlays
          renderMode == RENDER_MODE_SYNC
          --------- Game Map Shutdown ----------
          ------------ Game Shutdown -----------
          renderMode == RENDER_MODE_SYNC
          --------------------------------------
          Final pXAudio2 performanceData: Voices: 0/0 CPU: 0.00% Mem: 173kb
          idRenderSystem::Shutdown()
          Shutting down OpenGL subsystem

When the game crashes because the chains become visible, this is the text that is last entered:

          WARNING: idJointBuffer::MapBuffer: failed

When looking around in the changelogs of the drivers for the rx series, i noticed that there are issues for wolfenstein: old blood.

I was wondering if these issues are fixed because i have not found changelogs for the drivers so far where there is any mentioning about wolfenstein games in particular.

I might have missed a change log though...

Hi, I looked into the event viewer and noticed in the windows logs that during the game the gpu driver amdkmdap would crash.

I took drastic measures and unistalled all related rx 480 software and drivers. Downloaded the complete 17.5.1 install package. And reinstalled everything except relive.

The logs in the eventviewer are free of error messages or warnings. Everything should be fine.

I also made sure all the new windows 1703 game mode options are turned off.

In the game, i previously enabled the in game crash handler by typing into the console : com_enableCrashHandler 1.

I started the game again and after about 8 seconds when seeing the infamous chains, the game would crash.

This is what i got out of the log :

I hope AMD can make a workaround fix for this, as the publisher Bethesda has abandoned the game.

I guess some illegal address is being generated and written, read or called to.

Lucky, mine kept crashing on the opening scene. couldn't even cut the cargo lines.

Thanks for the post. If development has stopped on the game, I'm not sure if there is anything we can do.

I'd be interested to hear if other users are experiencing this issue.

                    Thanks for the reply.

Well, the steam community forum with wolfenstein :NO is riddled with people complaining it is not working and i have counted at least 17 people with exactly the same issue while owning a RX series gpu.

It seems there is something strange with the game engine that causes crashes mainly on AMD systems but people with an nvidia card do not seem to have any problems other than that older drivers had (awful performance). The bad performance seems to be entirely because of the game engine. It is very taxing.

My brother finished the game (he has an AMD FX CPU + nvidia GPU system) and he did not have any of the peculiarities i have and so many people have. The game ran flawless. Other colleagues at work also did not have any issues with the game who also happen to own an nvidia gpu based system.

To come back to the AMD gpu drivers and solutions found on the steam community forums.

I noticed that people where able to solve the issue by tricking the driver to not to recognize the game which with later steam updates is impossible to try out since steam verifies the integrity of the game. Others used a radeon settings modification program from guru3d to disable catalyst AI to get rid of the crashes. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. But that may be related to a patched game or newer drivers.

I did noticed that one person claimed that with driver version 16.9.2 worked for them.

I might still try that if windows 10 allows it. But there is something about this game that refuses to run properly on especially recent model AMD GPU cards.

I wish i could provide with more information what goes wrong other than what i have written above, i will see if i can find some optional debug command in the game that might spill some more information.

But it seems many console commands have been disabled for this game since the last patch.

Thank you very much for taking the effort. Amd Matt.

Steam overlay can be disabled or enabled. That makes no difference for the crashes when the chains are visible.

Do note, that sometimes it takes a few seconds. It can be as long as 10 seconds and suddenly the game will crash.

The game is based on the idtech 5 engine and runs through the opengl api.

In the first post i have a description of my pc.

                            Radeon settings:

                            The profile for wolfenstein:new order

everything default except opengl triple buffering = on.

                            Global Wattman settings i changed:

Frequency = -10% (yes, i really lowered it)

state 6 and state 7 voltage lowered to 1050mV.

                            Temperature max setting is 77C.

                            Target temperature is 70C.

I should note that with default wattman settings the crashing does not go away.

And i have 60fps peak, 51 fps average ( I estimate, since i see this number the most often) with drops to 44fps. This is the steam overlay fps counter and the game runs smooth. No tearing, no visual artifacts, no texture pop in  effects.

In the game, i have enabled the crash handler to provide additional information:

                            In game, do (CTRL+ ALT + ~).

The console will appear. type :com_enableCrashHandler 1

The game may have to be restarted for this to take effect.

When the game crashes, in the location: C:\Users\%USERNAME%\Saved Games\MachineGames\Wolfenstein The New Order\base\

html files will appear with crash information such as for example:

To get to the chains, you have to play the game up to chapter 4.

There you will get on the roof , sneak up on the guard on the roof and then proceed to your right to encounter the first chain on the door. This must be cut with the laser cutter. This chain must be cut, but when the chains is in the line of sight, the game wil crash after a few seconds, sometimes 8 to 10 seconds. It seems to be worse when i move sideways with the mouse or keyboard.  The Eisenheim prison (chapter 4) is filled with chain puzzles, and the last section of the game when attempting to free the prisoners, there are 5 chains to be cut. That was a lot of head aches.

Have you tried the various workarounds posted in the thread you linked?

The Video I linked isn't about a workaround, it is intended to support my argument, because it is  "demonstrates/prooves" that Wolfenstein the new order is at least working on an earlier amd graphics card with catalyst 14.4 driver support, seemingly without issues.  So my point is, was catalyst so much different these days than Radeon crimson driver support with game setting profiles is now, is it that what might cause some incompatibility?

I set the compatibility mode on Windows 7, with Admin rights and renamed the .exe file from ...x64 to x32 but none of the advices worked so far, game still crashes constantly.

Other Games like Tomb Raider, Battlefield 4 and Rocket League work just fine.

I tried some, but it did not work. Steam would not allow me to rename the file. And the other things i tried as well.

I did notice there is no radeon settings profile for the renamed executable.

I should note, that it is the renaming that solves the issue, and not the name itself.

WolfNewOrder_x32 is not why it works. I renamed the game to blablah.exe and added as non steam game and it still runs fine.

Now i added a profile for the game renamed as blablah.exe and guess what happens... The game crashes after the intro videos of the game.

Next, i removed the the profile again in radeon settings. But now when i execute blablah.exe, steam executes the WolfNewOrder_x64.exe executable.

The radeon profile is loaded again and the game crashes. It is definitely a radeon settings profile problem.

The only way to solve this is rename the game again and add it again as a non steam library game.

Next,. change the global settings of radeon settings for opengl triple buffering to on and thne the screen tearing is solved.

                                              edit:

I was wrong. The WolfNewOrder_x64.exe executable is not being run. Only in the steam program it shows wolfenstein new order. But blablah.exe is executed.

And i have the latest 17.5.2 drivers installed.

And for the above text, i figured out how to get the executable to run by adding it as a non steam game to the steam game library.

can we expect a fix in the upcomming driver?

Finally finding people with the same problems as me...

                                      My Specs:

                                      CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 1600X

GC: Radeon RX 580 by PowerColor

                                      Mainboard: ASUS Prime B350-Plus

The framerate in Wolfenstein the new order is all over the place from 30-50fps no matter which graphic settings I tried, when I deleted the game profile in Radeon settings it became slightly better(50-60fps). But this does not change the random sudden crashes(not just in this particular Eisenwald Prison Chapter), the game always throws me back to the desktop with no particular reason, which confuses me because with my specs it should run at least on ultra. Reading through a lot of Steam guides(many of them are 2 Years old) many suggest to update their catalyst driver and then it should be fine, and it seemed to work for a lot of People. I also found a Video on Youtube running this game with an older AMD R9 270X on Ultra settings, maybe you can compare the older catalyst game profiles for evidences whats causing this game trouble.

I hope you guys find a solution as soon as possible and I wish you good luck Matt^^

Hi, i noticed all of my crashes are related to the chains entering the viewport of the user(what you see). After chapter 4, there are more chains used but not as much.

For example in chapter 6 in the moon exhibit, there will not be any crashes until you get up there into the control room. And this may seem like totally random but it is not. I went to investigate, and found on the other side of the moon exhibit so far i did not see it until i came closer, there is a satellite suspended from the ceiling. And its suspension is the chain that you have to cut. I could not get close enough to cut that chain so i went on and jumped on a platform down which cost most of my life, but at least i could avoid the chain and move on.

I have not played the game further because there are more chains to be cut and a load of enemies i can take down easily but it is hard in a curved hall with more chains on the sides. I still have to investigate some more because i got the impression that as soon as the chains are cut, there is no more danger of crashes. But to be honest, as soon as i cut the chains, i made sure i got them out of my viewport. I have to verify that. Maybe other players can test for this as well ?

is Wolfenstein - New Order the same game engine as Rage? I got 0 problems there with the same hardware and same OS. Only difference is the driver I used, but I don´t remember which one.

the only thing what helpes me is to look close to ground while moving forward if I got a level part what causes a crash.

I had to reinstall Windows 10 because of driver encryption issues, so I tried to start Wolfensten TNO again now... and I didn't start at all, like it crashes while it tries to launch. So as soon as I read your recent Instruction(William you are highly appreaciated btw) how to deal with this problem, I followed by adding the renamed file as a non steam game, and the game was surprising able launch with smooth 30fps, however the game crashes again right after the section  "...this game is fictional..."  and before entering into the menu. Even with Windows 7 compability mode and running the file as an administrator, does fix that problem

It did not go good for me either. After creating the custom radeon settings profile, the game would no longer run at all and crash after the intro videos. I had to uninstall it and reinstall it to get it running again. Now it works again but with the same chains problem before. And now when it crashes, my whole windows crashes because the gpu driver is not reloaded. I get a black screen instead. This game and the drivers combined is a huge mess.

I reinstalled the drivers and the radeon settings program again. Maybe it will work again.

I compared the radeon settings profiles for w:no and my custom profile for blablah.exe and found some differences .

from my custom profile at least this is missing (But there is a lot more missing, i do not if it is relevant or not) :

                                                          "framerate": [

                                                                        { "bdf": 256, "settings": [ { "featureId": 0, "featureValue": { "acFPSCurrent_": 60, "acFPSEnabled_": 0, "dcFPSCurrent_": 60, "dcFPSEnabled_": 0 } } ] } ], "framerate_enabled": "FALSE",

Might explain why the game crashes when creating a profile for the renamed exe.

I also found it interesting that the steam id for the game is stored in the profile as well but not for a custom profile.

                                                        Steam community text :

New install of w:no and new install of 16.9.2 drivers + rx series card. It finally works, no more chain related crashes

The last few weeks i have been trying to get the game to stop crashing when the chains are in

sight. The game runs fine from the beginning, i only had problems when the chains appear starting from chapter 4.

I have tried all the fixes, deleted the radeon settings profile for w:no and created a new one and i guess something broke the game. I reinstalled it yesterday and the game worked again with exception of the chain related crashes.

I had already downloaded 16.9.2. drivers from the amd site, but i was a bit reluctant to install because downgrading gpu drivers had caused me trouble in the past. Yesterday i wanted to install the drivers but the game no longer worked. After installing the game again...

Trough software i completely uninstalled all amd gpu drivers and software. Did a restart. And then installed the 16.9.2 drivers. At the beginning there is a selection menu.

Now, i do not know if this made a difference, but there is on top of the software list to install a checkbox for installing profiles. By default this box is unchecked. I checked it and let the drivers profiles and software install. After a restart i tried the game again and now finally the chain related crashes are gone. I do not know what i am going to run into later but at least i can continue the game now.

I have vsync enabled in the game and in the global radeon settings profile triple buffering enabled. I also enabled triple buffering in the radeon settings wolfenstein profile.

With these drivers i have a 60fps - 44fps when running the game without tearing.

Of course, videos are played at 30fps.

There is no stuttering and i have no problems starting up.

I should note, that i run the game from an ssd.

I get this from the qconsole.log from the game :

GetWGLExtensionsWithFakeWindow: OpenGL version: "4.5.14008 Compatibility Profile Context 21.19.137.1"

this is with driver 17.5.2 or 17.5.1 .

GetWGLExtensionsWithFakeWindow: OpenGL version: "4.5.13474 Compatibility Profile Context 22.19.165.1"

If this is related to the profiles created, then there is a difference.

The 16.9.2 drivers can be downloaded here.

Please note that newer games might not run properly because of the older drivers.

After finishing wolfenstein:no, the drivers can be updated again to the latest version to solve issues with newer games.

I hope this works as well for other people.

No renaming needed or other fixes.

nice one. I hope that there will be a fix in the following 17.5.x drivers, because not everybody ready the comment section at steam or find this thread.

@william do you own W:Old Blood too? I dont wanna even start this one, because I had so much trouble with New Order.

And I got some more places where the game crashed, nut mostly where the chains were involved!

So I hope that the 16.9.1 are really stable

                                                            I tested: 17.5.1 , 17.5.2 , 16.8.2 , 16.11.3, 17.4.1 and maybe some other too

and for installing older driver I would uninstall the current ones and then use this "amdcleanuputility.exe"

one other thing what comes into my mind.

what happens before doing anything else and just deleting the profile for Wolfenstein:NO at radeon software with 17.5.x drivers?

                                                                  williamgaatjes

I did that and although the first time i had serious crashes as mentioned in my steam post, the second time it actually worked.

Inside the file gmdb.blb in location AppData\Local\AMD\CN information about the profiles is stored. I do not think all relevant information can be found here but it is interesting.  It seems some game have an amd id with a specific number and here also more information is stored. Sometimes the number -1 is entered as amd id so i guess the game is unknown to the radeon settings program.

The wolfenstein new order profile from driver 17.5.1 has an extra framerate option that i did not come across in other profiles. Also ,the later versions of the radeon settings.exe at least since 17.5.2 (That is when i encountered it but it could have been present in earlier versions) have a compatibility test and hardware check and store this information in this file as well after the compatibility check has been performed. During this compatibility check, the pc hardware is compared to a database the radeon settings program has somewhere on the disk.

It check basically what kind of hardware you have and if you have good enough hardware to play the game.

With all my love over AMD gpu´s over the last 6 years now.. I got so many problems with my current RX 470 that I got annoyed. Would be something different if someone would say: "we are working on this specific problem" - but nothing. And I got 3 threads open here on 3 diffrent problems.

Is there a lack of employees?

Both my kids played through the whole game wonderfully with cards from 2010! One has a GTX 460 and the other an HD5850. I always preferred Ati/Amd but this bug is killing my love for Radeon.

And workarounds should not be necessary at all for a recent game. If it was a dx7 game from 1999, i would not be that surprised to do some tips and tricks to get it working.

If assumed answered means that the AMD rx series driver team is investigating it then, i can only assume that the text will change to "solved with driver update 17.x.x  .".

That is not a good way to motivate people for future upgrades.

Steam Community :: Guide :: Prison crashes: AMD & RX card solution

However, it comes with 2 disadvantages

                                                                    - (at least for me) the previous savegame was not recognized by the game, so you probably have to start all over again

                                                                    - The Game is playable with around 20-30fps, but it looks like playing on a last gen-console

( after so many tries, I was glad to at least be able to finish Wolfenstein, so this choice is up to you)

Now crashes every minute of gameplay. Steam won't refund the game bacause I played for more than 2 hours. Please AMD fix this issue or I assure you I will never again buy anything form you. VERY disappointed with RX480.
