New update makes Firefox fullscreen videos lag.

    aetoro

So I first posted on Firefox reddit about an issue with fullscreen videos lagging here. It doesn't happen on any of the other browsers (I've tried edge and chrome) and the video streams fine when on any quality as long as its not fullscreen (also affects twitch streaming annoyingly). They had a recent update so I was thinking it might be a Firefox issue. Someone had replied to me that it could be a gpu issue, "The compositor was changed recently to more directly use the GPU." quoting this article. They recommended I uninstall drivers with DDU and then reinstall the drivers from the amd website. After I uninstalled it I noticed that fullscreen videos had no more lagging issues. I installed an earlier version of relive 16.x something and it was fine as well. So now I have a suspicion that it was the new update from amd drivers that were causing this issue. I'm unsure what to do because I want to watch videos on Firefox rather than some other browser but at the same time I want to keep my graphics drivers up to date. I'm posting here to see if someone more knowledgeable than me can help me out and recommend a course of action to deal with this problem.

Disable hardware acceleration in the browser.

I'm having the same issue, but it applies to all 3d/video content being rendered on my 290x being displayed in a fullscreen window, so either maximised video playback in firefox/chrome or any kind of game on my primary monitor that isn't running in dedicated fullscreen.

This has been an issue since I installed the 17.4.1 drivers and between the lack of ASR support for SteamVR and the fact that all games are unplayable in fullscreen window mode for me, I'm about to throw my 290x out the window and get a 1080Ti rather than wait for Vega as it seems like AMD's driver department is doing a really good job of crapping on their old customers right before the new product launch...

              Same here since 17.4.3. I have a RX 480 8GB MSI Gaming.

AND NO, I DON'T WANT TO DISABLE HADWARE ACCELERATION, WHY WOULD I DO THAT? I HAVE A LAST GEN GPU

I have the same problem and, since disabling Firefox's hardware acceleration is not an option for me, it's best to stick to the 17.3.3 driver - the last driver without these issues.

Why should I disable it? I have a 250€ graphics card that should work with anything. Disabling hardware acceleration makes firefox glitchy when you scroll and also blurs the characters on the screen. The thing is bigger when you have a 144hz screen... Also the latest drivers made my system lag when open apps and even playing CS:GO... So why should I demand good drivers? 250€, thats why.

The issue is that browser hardware acceleration are unable to provide consistent performance standards, and with frequent browser updates, these features may or may not work.

The simplest solution, as already recommended, is to disable HW acceleration in the Browser.

I do have the same issue and I can confirm that it was introduced with an AMD driver update and is not caused by Firefox! When I first noticed it, I immediately downgraded Firefox to the last known good version and the issue persisted. Then I wiped my GPU drivers with DDU and installed 17.4.1 which solved the issue.

Downgrading without DDU does not fix the issue. As of now, 17.4.1 and earlier are the only drivers that do not have this bug. 17.4.2 and later do have it. It is still there in 17.6.2. For every new driver version that was released with the bug not fixed, I submitted a bug report using the official channels.

Even now the bug is not in the "Known Issues" section of the driver release notes. I am very disappointed about the situation and that AMD blames Firefox for the issue. I dont want to be stuck on 17.4.1 forever...

Update: Problem still there on 17.7.1. However, closing "AMD External Events Client Module" in Windows Task Manager fixes the stuttering. This proves that it is a driver related issue.

I think video will lag too with hardware acceleration, DXVA for example. For sure it's not mozilla, because on other video card's with normal drivers all fine with same version of firefox. Disabling hardware acceleration it's annoying in 2017. I have FX 8350 and I must said it slow without GPU acceleration, try open and scroll some png 5000x5000 without HW acceleration or deviantart for example and you will see. As already suggested use 17.3.3, but it have problems with video (like vsync disabled)
