RX-460 Crash in linux while game with AMDGPU(workarround)

Question asked by jotajackson on Dec 6, 2016

Hi!, recently i upgraded my VGA from HD5670 to RX460(4gb), after this my system become unstable while game, Dota 2 and CSGO hangs after play a couple of minutes forcing me to use hard reset.

but now i got a temporary workaround to this(thx to Christoph Haag on bugs.freedesktop.org)

before to start the game, open a terminal:

$ su - (enter the root mode)

$ echo manual > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/power_dpm_force_performance_level  (this is to change the dpm mode)

$ echo 7 > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/pp_dpm_sclk (this will force your GPU to use the maximum Mhz in my case 1220Mhz)

$ exit (get out of root mode)

now you can play your games without problems, after the gaming time, to reverse the fix change "echo manual" for "echo auto" and "echo 7" to "echo 0"

with this i watched 45mim of dota 2 game at maximum settings like a charm. As Christoph Haag says, the crash is problaly related to change between power levels.

My system: Opensue 42.2, 12gb RAM, amd Fx-6300, XFX Rx460-4gb(with amdGPU kernel 4.9 rc7 , mobo gigabyte 78lmt
