I just got an MSI RX 480 Gaming X 4GB, and I was excited for a nice upgrade over my old Nvidia GTX 670. Unfortunately, the 480 is performing worse.
In Borderlands 2 using Eyefinity at 6048x1080, using the in-game setting to cap the framerate at 60, I would get 40-60 fps on my old 670. On the much more powerful 480 I'm getting 14-60 fps. Even during the character screen, when the camera pans around your character in a circle, the 670 would maintain 40+ while the 480 drops down to 30. MSI Afterburner shows GPU utilization is all over the place, while the core clock is rock solid at 1303 Mhz.
At times I'll be standing somewhere in the game when the frame rate drops to 20 fps, and if I just keep standing in that spot it'll slowly climb back up to 30, 40, 50+. Nothing is changing, I'm just standing in the same spot with nothing going on, but the fps slowly increases. At other times, in other locations, it stays at 30 and doesn't budge.
I don't know what's going on, but I'm very disappointed that my new, much more powerful, GPU is performing much worse than my old one.
Attached is my DX Diag and the performance capture I made using MSI Afterburner.
