i have an FX-8370 but it runs very hot when running games that my 10y/o cpu ran quietly any ideas plz
gpu is a msi R7 370 4gb
M/B is Asus M5 A97 R2.0)
How hot is very hot?
What program are you using to determine CPU core temp?
Have you considered an aftermarket cooler? Is this the Wraith Cooler?
I'm running the heatsink and fan that came in the box with the processor just bought an Arctic freezer 13 will fit shortly. It runs fairly quiet until you go into games then the fan goes nuts and the heat in the case gets very hot, not got a number as not sure which program is best to run to push the cpu (can you recommend one). This is my first home build could do with the guidance
MSI Afterburner (latest version) has a cpu core temp on screen display option. Check it out.
Speccy and Aida64 also show core temps.
ALL FX-8 core CPUs consume a large amount of electrical power because you have 8 actual cores running all of the time. The FX 8-core CPUs require a quality HSF to provide proper cooling AND good airflow thru your PC case to exhaust the heat from the CPU and GPU. The Arctic 13 HSF is a modest cooler. If you have excellent airflow thru the case and the fan is running at full speed under load, it might be able to cool your 8-core FX-8370 but I doubt it. More than likely you will need to move to a higher thermal capacity HSF such as the Coolermaster Hyper 212 EVO or similar as your CPU is at the upper limit of the FX-8000 series CPUs and it requires a high thermal capacity HSF. make sure that your case and heat sink fans are all running at 100%/Maximum in the BIOS/operating system or the slow fan speed will hurt cooling performance significantly.

I had the 8350 (slower than yours) and despite a Top Notch Noctua NH U12S (or equivalent, don't recall) and fully Noctua ventilated case the CPU fan had to work 100% to keep it below 70C.
So I'm talking about premium air flow case... Not a surprise to me your chip get's hot considering, with all due respect, that you have probably a lower airflow.
This may sound stupid, but did you put thermal paste on the cpu heat speaker before putting your cpu cooler on? Did you remove the plastic cover off the cpu cooler?
Agrees on that. Also not more thermal paste than a grain of rice / green pea.
