Sapphire RX480 Nitro+ black screen/freezing

Question asked by leozack on Sep 17, 2016

Ok so I was running an XFX Ghost HD6850 for a few years and in last half year or so sometimes when I put my win10 x64 PC to sleep and wake it back up my primary monitor connected dvi->dvi would be total jargain random colours, a total mess.  Using 2nd monitor to put it to sleep and wake again would usually fix it.

I've been waiting 9 months to get an RX480.

I finally got it and the first thing I noticed (still using drivers from Feb 23 2016) was that after sleep/wake both my monitors would say no signal and I'd need to reset the PC physically.  I updated my drivers to 16.8.3 on 5th sep and it still happened.  I found if I unplugged my 2nd monitor connected hdmi->dvi then it would wake up ok. I also found if I ran Futuremark TimeSpy it seemed to goto the same needs-a-pc-reset monitor-sleep state when that had loaded - but after a few reboots and disabling the cpuz/gpuz in the Futuremark options file it ran the test ok.  I re-enabled what I disabled and it remained testing ok - strange!  But I left it alone.

I also noticed some coil whine that only happens with Futuremark testing (noticed on a previous R390 I sent back in jan) but didn't want to return this 480

I updated to 16.9.1 on 11th sep and it seemed to fix the sleep/wake issue - yay I could now leave my monitors connected finally!

But in the last couple days I've had the damn thing freeze a game (music/sound continues) for no reason at random times (always bad - like while winning a ranked 1v1 rocket league game earlier tonight, or just now on XCOM:EW at the end of my mission before I could save, grrrrr).

I've just updated to 16.9.1-Sep13 Hotfix and played XCOM again and again it froze in the middle of the mission for no reason.

This doesn't seem related to the pc-needs-to-be-rebooted problems above, and is a new problem!

This is totally unacceptable and if it's going to randomly freeze up my games then I basically can't play them.  But if I roll back drives I can't even sleep/wake without unplugging a 2nd monitor!

I've just found countless people with RX480 problems and I'm thinking siiiiiiiiiiiigh - I've been ATI for like 15y and didn't want to go back to Nvidia ...

and many others it seems
