Unexpected resolution changes when entering full screen.

Question asked by flawd on Jul 13, 2016

System Info:

Windows 10 64bit

AMD R9 Fury X with Crimson Edition 16.7.2 Hotfix

Display Devices:

Display 1: HP 27xi 1920x1080 @60Hz Passive DP to HDMI

Display 2: Asus VE228 1080x1920 @60Hz Active DP to HDMI

Display 3: Sony AVAmp STR-DH520 to LG-42LV4400-UA 1920x1080 @60Hz Passive DP to HDMI

Display 1 and 3 are cloned as my primary display with 2 extended in portrate mode.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77M-D3H-MVP

CPU: QuadCore Intel Core i7-3770, 4100 MHz (41 x 100)

Power Supply: CORSAIR Professional Series Gold AX850 850W

When I have displays 1 and 3 cloned and I run a full screen game at 1080p AIDA64 reports that the current desktop resolution is 720p. On display 2 the task bar and background still appear to be at 1080p but the icons are enlarged. When exiting the game all my desktop icons are all rearranged in 2 by 2 grids with a space separating each cluster. This only happens when cloning to display 3 and is really annoying.

A workaround I have found is to ensure display 3 is powered on and set to display my computer before installing windows and each restart after. If I ever power on my computer with display 3 off or in any other configuration it causes the issue again. The only way to recover is to reinstall windows, adding to the annoyance.

I've tried using different cables and adapters, uninstalled the display driver with DDU then reinstall the drivers. !
