Ubuntu 16.04; help needed to setup AMD GPU for Anaconda, Theano, Keras calculations.

Question asked by gofaster on May 25, 2016

I'm studying machine learning and would like to train a neural network using Anaconda, Theano and Keras on the;

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Whistler [Radeon HD 6630M/6650M/6750M/7670M/7690M]

in my Lenovo G770 core i7 (switchable graphics), 8GB RAM, laptop running Ubuntu 16.04.

Having just made the laptop dual booting and installed 16.04, I now find that the AMD Catalyst is no longer supported and that an alternative AMDGPU driver is offered instead.

I'd really appreciate if someone could lay out step-by-step the instructions to make this set-up function as desired, if indeed the hardware & software I have are actually compatible.

I'm floundering around with this and not really sure what software needs installing and how to set it up.

Help would be gratefully received.

Many thanks.
