AMD install in different folders and not finding previous install modules

    dotnetcarpenter

I keep getting old versions suggested as updates in both Radeon Settings. On top of that, it seems that the update installer doesn't recognize AMD Gaming Evolved App, VulcanRT and AMD Install Manager, even though I have installed these modules multiple times.

The AMD Gaming Evolved App suggest that I install/update to Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.3.2. But the Radeon Settings says I have 16.5.2.1 installed. It seems that AMD both uses c:\AMD and c:\Program Files(86)\AMD as installation target.

Please help me clean up this mess.

      From Radeon Setting:

      Radeon Software Version - 16.5.2.1

      Radeon Software Edition - Crimson

      Windows Version - Windows 10 (64 bit)

      System Memory - 8 GB

      CPU Type - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00GHz

The latest install report (note that this report says I have Vulcan 1.0.8.0 but a previous report said 1.0.9.0):

So after updating to 16.5.2.1 Radeon Settings finally report that I got the latest software but "AMD Gaming Evolve App" still suggest that I download 16.3.2

          Radeon Software Version - 16.5.2.1

          Radeon Software Edition - Crimson

          Windows Version - Windows 10 (64 bit)

          System Memory - 8 GB

          CPU Type - Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4510U CPU @ 2.00GHz

          From "AMD Gaming Evolve App":

Raptr/gaming evolved is a third party program you chose to install. It does not give correct information on driver updates. Most people who use this program uncheck the box for "check for updates' in the raptr settings. (there are 2 places) Ignore the notices. Or if you choose to uninstall > How to remove raptr/gaming evolved

I didn't install Raptr the first 5 times but in the end I got desperate and installed everything. It helped and Radeon Settings are now only reporting the latest version (16.5.2.1) and doesn't offer me old updates. But I still have AMD stuff in both C:\AMD\ and C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD. With only 8.7 GB left out of 108GB on my C: drive, I'm keen to get rid of duplicates, old packages and extras.

I'll uninstall Raptr and PlaysTV. But I need some guidance with the other stuff.

Hang on and I'll post the affected file structure as I see it.

Thanks! But I think I'm gonna take a different route since I'm on a paid mobile plan, in the a cabin in a forest.

Basically I have two folders that think contains most if not all the cruft from my many update attempts.

                        C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD with

                                                                          ATI.ACE

                                                                          CNext

                        C:\AMD with

                                            Packages

                                            Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.4.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-Apr4

                                            Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May3

                                            Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-MinimalSetup_web

                                            Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16

                                            installation.log

                                            InternetReadFileEx.txt

                                            download.log

                                            installation.txt

I think it is safe tp delete old Non-WHQL folders, e.g. 16.4.1 and 16.5.1, while I'm unsure if I need to keep 16.5.2.1. It's the current version but could just be installation files that are already copied or compiled to new targets.

The MinimalSetup_web can be deleted, since I'm pretty sure the app just downloads the needed packages.

The installation.log just displays how many threads the installation process used - irrelevant.

InternetReadFileEx.txt looks like download process steps, perhaps used to show a progress bar during installation - irrelevant.

download.log looks horrific and contains lots of duplicate actions, such as:

                        Downloadind thread started

Downloadind started for package: AMD Install Manager

Downloadind started for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD PCI filter driver

Downloadind started for package: AMD Display Driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD Display Driver

                        Downloadfinished: 1

                        Exit download thread

                        Downloadind thread started

Downloadind started for package: AMD Install Manager

Downloadind finished for package: AMD Install Manager

Downloadind started for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

A testament to of how many times I had to do the update process. Still it's irrelevant.

installation.txt is is similar to download.log but less verbose. Again lots of installs of the same software.

The line, "Package is going to install: AMD Install Manager", is present 9 times!

I also see that I get the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. As a developer I already got them

and since so many different applications need them, I'm surprised that they don't even search

the target computer to see if they really need to install them (again). Sloppy work IMHO.

@kingfish, do you agree that the *Non-WHQL-64Bit* directories can safely be deleted?

I'm gonna go through the Packages folder in an update - hint* it looks really bad.

                        Looking for duplicates yields:

Yes I agree, deleting all previous software will free up several GB of space. The only downside is if you wish to roll back to previous drivers in Device Manager...but if everything is working correctly, that's not a concern.

BTW...I deleted a response I made as it was incorrect.

                                dotnetcarpenter

@kingfish, nice. I'll get on with deleting files (and make grapefruit marmalade).

Seeing so many duplicates and old versions is depressing. It's almost like AMD doesn't have a Quality Assurance team (QA) or if they do, they are effectively ignored.

OK, so lets look at this a little different. I got 9.08 free disk space out of 108GB. I would really like to have 15% free space, so lets see if we can reach that goal!

Disclaimer: I'm using Explorer to see disk space, which isn't accurate overall but for percentage difference it's good enough.

                                Removing old Non-WHQL folders (1033MB) and Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-MinimalSetup_web (68MB).

                                From 8.4 % to 9.4%.

In Packages/ we got two folders, Apps/ and Drivers/. Apps/ contains at least two duplicates of mfc110u.dll at we saw before.

But that is not all. There is 59 applications and 57 folders!

Luckily they have version numbers in their name.

The top 10 looks like this:

                                    radeon-crimson-16.3.2-minimalsetup.exe

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-raptr/

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-raptr.exe

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-vc1232.exe

                                    non-whql-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.5.1-win10-win8.1-win7-may3.exe

                                    non-whql-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.4.1-win10-win8.1-win7-apr4.exe

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-vulkanrt-64bit/

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-vulkanrt-64bit.exe

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-ccc-next64-64bit/

Hmm.. That look like something we just got rid off. There is even raptr which I just uninstalled and deleted from the registry (thanks kingfish). The meta information says all the applications (.exe) is version 0.0.0.0 - not something you would have if you meant to release new version of them. This looks like one-off installation programs.

Let's get rid of old versions again.

Current version: Radeon Software Version - 16.5.2.1

Removing old .exe files and folders from C:\AMD\Packages\Apps

                                From 9.4% to 10.4%.

I'll do a restart to make sure that my Radeon drivers are still functioning.

Yes! Everything seems to be working just fine. Dxdiag reports that "The file aticfx64,aticfx64,aticfx64,amdxc64,aticfx32,aticfx32,aticfx32,amdxc32,atiumd64,atidxx64,atidxx64,atiumdag,atidxx32,atidxx32,atiumdva,atiumd6a,atitmm64 is not digitally signed, which means that it has not been tested by Microsoft's Windows Hardware Quality Labs (WHQL)." Well, I wouldn't be doing this if AMD had a long release cycle which I bet it would take to get Microsoft approval, so no surprise here.

Lets take a look in the C:\AMD\Packages\Drivers folder. Again, old versions Radeon Crimson.

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-amdkmafd-win10-64bit/

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-amdkmafd-win10-64bit.exe

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-c0301028-win10-64bit.exe

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-usbfilter-win10-64bit/

                                    Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-usbfilter-win10-64bit.exe

Removing all content from C:\AMD\Packages\Drivers (632MB).

                                From 10.4% to 11%.

So the C:\AMD folder is pretty clean. I still have Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16, weighed in at 516MB. But lets take a look in the Program Files folders before we kill that one too.

A quick duplicate search on name and size reveals that some of the files are directly copied over to C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM

                                    mfc110u.dll    C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Bin64    5,36 MB    31-08-2015 16:35:44

                                    mfc110u.dll    C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Bin64    5,36 MB    27-07-2015 03:26:28

                                    xerces-c_2_6.dll    C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Bin64    2,26 MB    31-08-2015 16:35:50

                                    xerces-c_2_6.dll    C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Bin64    2,26 MB    31-08-2015 10:35:52

And then there is just the bad habit of including Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable in every distribution (why does Windows even have a central registry?).

                                    vcredist_x64.exe    C:\Program Files\Wireshark    6,86 MB    14-04-2016 19:25:24

Lastly there is some weird stuff:

                                    WdfCoinstaller01011.dll    C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Packages\Drivers\AMDPSP\W764A    1,72 MB    05-05-2016 05:58:10

                                    WdfCoinstaller01011.dll    C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Packages\Drivers\AMDPSP\WB64A    1,72 MB    04-05-2016 07:35:36

                                    WdfCoinstaller01011.dll    C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Packages\Drivers\AMDPSP\WT64A    1,72 MB    04-05-2016 07:35:08

You really need to include WdfCoinstaller01011.dll 3 times in the same distribution? Well, it looks like it was an all-nighter release. So I can sympathise with the developers.

I think it's safe to delete the last folder in C:\AMD

                                From 11% to 11.5%

In C:\Program Files (x86)\VulkanRT we got two folders, 1.0.11.0/ and 1.0.3.1/.

Common sense says that we only need the newest version. Radeon Settings says we have AMD Vulkan Driver Version - 1.0.11.0, so the old one is cruft.

Well, 1.0.3.1/ take up less than 1MB of space. So while deleting it will make our file system a tiny bit leaner, it won't get us anywhere near the 15% of free space.

But while looking through C:\Program Files\ I saw some ATI folders. If I remember correctly they are also from AMD.

C:\Program Files\ATI\CIM\ has a similar file structure to the AMD folder and inspecting C:\Program Files\ATI\CIM\Reports\Report.xml.2015_11_05_04.53.48.xml brings up a familiar report.

                                    Catalyst™ Install Manager

                                    Installation Report

                                    11/05/15 04:53:47

This looks old and pre Crimson. The ATI folders (ATI and ATI Technologies) is almost empty. As if a bad written uninstall script had tried to remove them. This is cruft as well. But at a meager 52KB, not something that makes a difference.

But it gives us a new search parameter. Lets see what a search for ATI brings up.

                                    C:\Program Files\Common Files\ATI Technologies\

                                    C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD\ATI.ACE\

                                    C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\

                                    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ATI Technologies\

                                    C:\ProgramData\ATI\

                                    C:\Users\dotnet\AppData\Local\ATI\

                                    C:\Users\dotnet\AppData\Roaming\ATI\

                                    C:\Users\Guest\AppData\Local\ATI\

                                    C:\Users\Guest\AppData\Roaming\ATI\

At first glance everything but C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD\ATI.ACE, since it's in a our current AMD folder, looks like old cruft.

C:\Program Files\Common Files\ATI Technologies\Multimedia\atimpenc64.dll (2014-11-20) is according to its description, a mpeg encoder. Well, that is probably useful to have.

C:\Program Files (x86)\ATI Technologies\ is mostly empty. It has atiapoem.blb (2013-05-30) and appprofiles.reg. A quick search in the registry reveals its presence. Since it has OEM in the name and is very old, well assume two things. One, it was pre-installed with the operating system (Windows 7). Two, AMD might be using this to validate the purchase of the hardware. We'll leave that alone as well.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\ATI Technologies\atimpenc64.dll (2014-11-20) is also a mpeg encoder. Seemingly a duplicate but the (86) in the path tells us that it's for 32bit programs. Since it still makes a lot of sense to use 32bit programs (for one, they use less memory), we'll leave that alone as well.

C:\ProgramData\ATI\ACE is empty and there is no files or other folders.

C:\Users\dotnet\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\ (35KB) is peculiar. It has almost no files but this one, C:\Users\dotnet\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles\Normal Joe.xml has funny name. Inspection reveal it to be a configuration file.

                                C:\Users\dotnet\AppData\Roaming\ATI\ACE\ is empty.

C:\Users\Guest\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\ (53KB) contains some of the same files as C:\Users\dotnet\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\, but is for some reason slightly bigger.

                                Manifest.Bin

                                Manifest.xml

                                Profiles.xml

                                C:\Users\Guest\AppData\Roaming\ATI\ACE is empty.

Now, we'll leave these directory structures as is. My reasoning is that some old parts of Crimson might still use some of the files. While I doubt it, removing them gives us no benefit. They don't take up any useful amount of space, so to be on the safe side...

The empty folder structures take next to zero space and I know by experience what happens when you try to do anything with a non existing folder. It will crash your program. Creating a safe-guard that check for folder existence require a very slow IO operation in contrast to just try and then catch an error if it happen. Since none of the installation applications from AMD removed these folders and files, we can might assume that old AMD code presume their existence. We CAN assume that code from AMD handles errors, so in the end, nothing really bad will probably happen.

But my advice; the few KB is not worth the risk.

In the end I didn't get to 15% but I did shave off 3.22GB.

The installation process is not impressive. Perhaps AMD should spend a little more energy on the quality of their releases.

Don't get me wrong, I do think release early and often is a good strategy but please add some quality to your work. Please do proper installation packages if you plan to release often. Working in sprints is not an accuse to have proper craftsmanship.

And thumb up to AMD for having an open forum and not a tweet storm when their products are not in order.

                    • Re: AMD install in different folders and not finding previous install modules
                      dotnetcarpenter

Basically I have two folders that think contains most if not all the cruft from my many update attempts.

                      C:\Program Files (x86)\AMD with

                                                                        ATI.ACE

                                                                        CNext

                      C:\AMD with

                                          Packages

                                          Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.4.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-Apr4

                                          Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May3

                                          Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-MinimalSetup_web

                                          Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16

                                          installation.log

                                          InternetReadFileEx.txt

                                          download.log

                                          installation.txt

I think it is safe tp delete old Non-WHQL folders, e.g. 16.4.1 and 16.5.1, while I'm unsure if I need to keep 16.5.2.1. It's the current version but could just be installation files that are already copied or compiled to new targets.

The MinimalSetup_web can be deleted, since I'm pretty sure the app just downloads the needed packages.

The installation.log just displays how many threads the installation process used - irrelevant.

InternetReadFileEx.txt looks like download process steps, perhaps used to show a progress bar during installation - irrelevant.

download.log looks horrific and contains lots of duplicate actions, such as:

                      Downloadind thread started

Downloadind started for package: AMD Install Manager

Downloadind finished for package: AMD Install Manager

Downloadind started for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

Downloadind started for package: AMD PCI filter driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD PCI filter driver

Downloadind started for package: AMD Display Driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD Display Driver

                      Downloadfinished: 1

                      Exit download thread

                      Downloadind thread started

Downloadind started for package: AMD Install Manager

Downloadind finished for package: AMD Install Manager

Downloadind started for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

Downloadind finished for package: AMD AUDIO filter driver

A testament to of how many times I had to do the update process. Still it's irrelevant.

installation.txt is is similar to download.log but less verbose. Again lots of installs of the same software.

The line, "Package is going to install: AMD Install Manager", is present 9 times!

I also see that I get the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable. As a developer I already got them

and since so many different applications need them, I'm surprised that they don't even search

the target computer to see if they really need to install them (again). Sloppy work IMHO.

                      Looking for duplicates yields:

                      From 8.4% to 9.4%.

In Packages/ we got two folders, Apps/ and Drivers/. Apps/ contains at least two duplicates of mfc110u.dll at we saw before.

But that is not all. There is 59 applications and 57 folders!

Luckily they have version numbers in their name.

The top 10 looks like this:

                        radeon-crimson-16.3.2-minimalsetup.exe

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-raptr/

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-raptr.exe

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-vc1232/

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-vc1232.exe

                        non-whql-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.5.1-win10-win8.1-win7-may3.exe

                        non-whql-64bit-radeon-software-crimson-16.4.1-win10-win8.1-win7-apr4.exe

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-vulkanrt-64bit/

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-vulkanrt-64bit.exe

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-ccc-next64-64bit/

Hmm.. That look like something we just got rid off. There is even raptr which I just uninstalled and deleted from the registry (thanks kingfish). The meta information says that all the applications (.exe) is version 0.0.0.0 - not something you would have if you meant to release new version of them.

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-c0301028-win10-64bit/

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-c0301028-win10-64bit.exe

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-usbfilter-win10-64bit/

                        Radeon-Crimson-16.3.2-usbfilter-win10-64bit.exe

Removing all content from C:\AMD\Packages\Drivers (632MB).

                      From 10.4% to 11%.

So the C:\AMD folder is pretty clean. I still have Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16, weighed in at 516MB. But lets take a look in the Program Files folders before we kill that one too.

A quick duplicate search on name and size reveals that some of the files are directly copied over to C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        mfc110u.dll C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Bin64 5,36 MB 31-08-2015 16:35:44

                        mfc110u.dll C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Bin64 5,36 MB 27-07-2015 03:26:28

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        xerces-c_2_6.dll C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Bin64 2,26 MB 31-08-2015 16:35:50

                        xerces-c_2_6.dll C:\Program Files\AMD\CIM\Bin64 2,26 MB 31-08-2015 10:35:52

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

And then there is just the bad habit of including Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable in every distribution (why does Windows even have a central registry?).

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

                        vcredist_x64.exe C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Packages\Apps\VC13RTx64\vcredist_x64 6,86 MB 22-04-2015 10:37:00

                        vcredist_x64.exe C:\Program Files\Wireshark 6,86 MB 14-04-2016 19:25:24

                      ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly there is some weird stuff:

                        WdfCoinstaller01011.dll C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Packages\Drivers\AMDPSP\W764A 1,72 MB 05-05-2016 05:58:10

                        WdfCoinstaller01011.dll C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Packages\Drivers\AMDPSP\WB64A 1,72 MB 04-05-2016 07:35:36

                        WdfCoinstaller01011.dll C:\AMD\Non-WHQL-64Bit-Radeon-Software-Crimson-16.5.2.1-Win10-Win8.1-Win7-May16\Packages\Drivers\AMDPSP\WT64A 1,72 MB 04-05-2016 07:35:08

You really need to include WdfCoinstaller01011.dll 3 times in the same distribution? Well, it looks like it was an all-nighter release. So I can sympathize with the developers.

Since none of the installation applications from AMD removed these folders and files, we might assume that old AMD code presume their existence. We CAN assume that code from AMD handles errors, so in the end, nothing really bad will probably happen.

But my advice; the few KB is not worth the risk.

In the end I didn't get to 15% but I did shave off 3.22GB, not counting Raptr and PlaysTV.

The installation process is not impressive. Perhaps AMD should spend a little more energy on the quality of their releases.

Don't get me wrong, I do think release early and often is a good strategy but please add some quality to your work. Please do proper installation packages if you plan to release often. Working in sprints is not an accuse to not have proper craftsmanship.

And thumb up to AMD for having an open forum and not a tweet storm when their products are not in order.
