My suggestion would be to install the latest display driver provided on the HP web site. Laptops generally need drivers that have been customized by the laptop maker.

You are correct. Solutions are specific to the computer brand and model (HP ProBook 450 in my case).
I called HP Customer Service on 1 800 334 5144 (there's also 474 6836). The guy gave me a URL to type into my browser that is valid only for my model. This put me onto a HP Support page. Under Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64 bit) Downloads, choose Driver-Graphics and download AMD Video Drivers and Control Panel. After following the subsequent instructions, an updated version of the faulty driver was installed and all my problems were resolved.
This should help other HP owners who are having the AMD graphics driver. Hopefully other brands offer similar support.
