Weird clicking noises from within my monitor and screen flickering when playing Ashes of the Singularity - any way to solve this?

I bought a new monitor, a AOC G2460PF which has 144Hz and FreeSync. My GPU is a Radeon R9 290X 8 GB by Sapphire.

With the game "Ashes of the singularity" I get a real weird and actually scary bug: after some moments of playing the game, the monitor starts flickering, sometimes with greyish bars showing and it does make clicking sounds while doing so.

The game allows to turn on and off both VSync and FreeSync and to be run in DX11 or DX12. Any of these combinations will produce that strange behaviour. The crackling, clicking sounds definitely come from within the monitor and not through my head phones. Does anybody know how to solve this problem? I already tried to install the latest monitor driver (yes, AOC provides such a thing) but that didn't help. Reinstalling the latest Crimson driver also didn't solve the issue.

Any input on this is greatly appreciated.
