Slow shutdown and/or Audio Service doesn't start

    jak0lantash

      Hi everyone,

      Happy New Year!

I've been having two issues with my PC for some time, so I decided to reinstall it from scratch, but both issues reappear right after installing AMD display driver.

      1) Every shutdown is abnormally long

      2) After installing the AMD Display Drivers, at some point the Audio Service stops from starting at boot and the shutdown is extremely long. Reboot time is about 10 minutes! If this doesn't appear straight after installation of the driver, running a benchmark, or playing a game, triggers the issue.

When using Display Driver Uninstaller, both issues immediately disappear.

      I'm using Windows 7 Pro.

I've written a short script to benchmark reboot time, it logs the current time in a file, reboots the system and logs the time after reboot. I run several reboots and take the average.

On fresh install with all Windows Update (+ SP1) and all (other) drivers up to date (downloaded from motherboard support site and updated from DriversCloud.com), reboot time is always between 35 and 45 seconds.

Once AMD Display Driver and Radeon Settings are installed (no autostart for Radeon Settings), reboot times are 75-85 seconds.

More specifically, it's the shutdown time that is much longer.

I had this issue on first fresh install, repeated from scratch with same issue. Restarted from scratch a third time, taken a Clonezilla image before installing AMD Display Driver, had the same issue after installing it. Restore the image, had the same issue again.

I enabled Verbose mode for Shutdown messages and used Windows Performance Toolkit to trace Shutdown. While it takes more tahn 40 seconds from Desktop to the end of "Shutting down" screen, WPT only traces 9 seconds (which is roughly the time to get to "Shutting down" + a few more seconds).

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System\VerboseStatus = 1

Does anyone have a clue about these issues? I would greatly appreciate any help in troubleshooting it.

      Thank you for your help!!

          Anyone?

          Even just troubleshooting tips?

          Please

What are you using for audio, the GPU or a soundcard? Have you disabled one or the other? My SoundBlaster goes a little mad when AMDs kicks in, then I just disable it along with HD Audio Bus under System Devices.

                  Hi, thanks for the reply.

I'm using the motherboard audio. I also have a Logitech G930 (USB Wireless). I'm sure I didn't install the driver since the fresh install, but I'm not sure I didn't plug it in to charge. I'll double check that.

                      Windows may be "helping".

Another way would be to unplug your headset, disable the on-board via the bios and disable everything audio related. Enable and plug in again.

Run a dxdiag (run>dxdiag) and see what comes up.

I've just checked, the headset is not know on the system, the driver is not present, the device is not listed under audio device.

The headset uses a USB dongle that I'm a 100% sure I never plugged in (as I was using only my laptop), and a USB cable for charge. I may have charged the headset.

So I just tried it. I plugged in the headset via the cable without plugging in the dongle, the audio device doesn't come up, so it confirms what's written on several forums, the G930 works only with the USB dongle (the cable is only to charge).

If necessary, I can restore an image a try again.

                          • Re: Slow shutdown and/or Audio Service doesn't start

                            Just to add:

If I use DisplayDriverUninstaller, it immediately removes both issues.

If I install the ATI Display Driver, it immediately creates both issues: slow shutdown, and Audio Service doesn't start.

So, I don't think it's related to the headset (of course, I can be wrong). Do you still want me to run dxdiag?

dxdiag will show whats on your system, may show a conflict. You can post the report here.

This is a head scratcher, what if you removed the 7970?

                                    Hi,

                                    Thanks for the suggestion.

I will test with each graphic card individually, and will let you know.

It's gonna take a few days though.

So shutdown issue is only present when both cards are connected, regardless of order.

I didn't run into the Audio Service issue so far. It's not a systematic hit.

                                      Thanks for your help

                                        (bump)

                                        Any idea? please?

I noticed something else. If I check Radeon Settings, it's written that the main card 280X is PCIE 2.0 x8 and the second one 7970 is PCIE 2.0 x16, even though both PCIE slots should be x16. It's weird that the first card is only x8, no?

If I run a render test with GPU-Z 0.8.6, the main card 280X is at x8 2.0, and the second one 7970 is at x16 1.1!

                                        What is going on?!

Sorry for the late reply, barely any time to eat lately

Sound, I'm still thinking about, its very odd but it must be a conflict somewhere causing Windows Audio Service to fail. My HDMI audio drivers failed with 16.1, but dont need them (disabled now).

As for PCI speeds, the cards worked before? You could check the card physically next to the slot, make sure nothings broken. Re sit is the best advice for now. 1.1 as you know would mean the cards not active. What if you swap them?

I'm doing more tests with another ISO of windows.

The PCI, under load, goes to x8 2.0. I'm getting the same kind of benchmark results as before, so I'd say this is an issue since I got the card.

If I swap the cards, the issue remains on the same card, same when tested one by one.

Hmm. No obvious damage in the PCI bus on either the mobo or GPU? it just takes one of them SMD capacitors to knock off for the card to think the PCI slot is only whatever size.

We taking about the 7xxx or the 280x, might be worth if the mobo is fine to send it back for warranty unless you can test them on another system.

                                                        Hi Tom,

No damage that I can see. This is the 280X, and it's most likely out of warranty by now unfortunately.

                                                        Anyway, this is another problem.

Now that I have installed another version of Windows 7 Ultimate, it worked ok. No shutdown issue, no audio issue (yet), with latest ATI drivers. But (because there is a but of course), now that I have installed all Windows Updates, I have another issue! i have black screen for about 10sec before the desktop is shown. Of course, uninstalling the ATI driver makes the issue dissapeat. I'm looking into this now. Any ideas?

I'm getting really desperate to finally getting these drivers to work...

Is there anything Windows had downloaded that it shouldn't be when updating. With 7 I can imagine it has a few, so the log might be long. Anything that might conflict or overwrite.

As for the black screen delay, I haven't used 7 for ages. I know with 10 it would happen for 60 seconds before login. Then the system would kick into life again (hdd etc).

                                                                Hi Tom,

After many, many tests, I finally found a working solution: Windows 10 installed from scratch.

It saddens me a bit to move away from Windows 7, but in a way, it's a good thing it forced me to be up to date

For the PCI speed being 8x, I can live with it for the moment. I'll finish setting up my new OS and see then.

I get same performance as on Windows 7 before (except on FurMark, which scores are apparently not comparable between Windows 7 & 10).

Thank you so much for your help.

                                                                Closing this thread now.

                                                                Solution -> Windows 10
