Vertical stripes crash with HD7770

I have an computer with unchanged hardware configuration since 2 years. I upgraded Windows 10 like 2-3 months ago and I upgraded to Radeon Software 15.12 a couple of weeks ago. Since that time I experience the following:

  • random crashes during play (World of Warcraft, I didn't test (play) with other games)
    • vertical stripes screen (random colors)
    • sound can be heard for 2-3 seconds more, than complete freeze
    • reset required to recover, except
  • after said crash, Windows sometimes doesn't boot (black screen during startup)
    • sometimes a couple of more resets helps
    • safe mode is OK, but sometimes even after safe mode boot doesn't happen
    • it can be resolved by reverting back the display driver to Windows Generic Display Driver (or something like that, my Windows is not English)

This behaviour is very hectic. Sometimes there is no crash for days, but there was a day with like 10 crashes in 2 hours. Sometimes reset helps, sometimes I need to mess with the Display Drivers in Safe mode.


My questions:


  • What triggers the vertical stripes crash in general?
    • I saw lots of posts about these crashes, even pretty old ones, so I assume this is a general response to a family of faults.
  • Is there any known fault in 15.12, which may cause this?
    • Again, I saw a couple of known faults in the driver release notes, which talked about crashes in specific games, but
      • I assume you don't test all the games.
      • And I don't know if crashes mentioned in the release notes have the same sympthoms.
    • When to expect a solution?
  • Is there a crash log or memory dump or anything I can collect after such crashes? (And attach to my question somehow.)
  • Is there a previous driver, which I can safely use until this is resolved?
    • I don't know what driver version I used before upgrading to 15.12. Is there a version history on my computer somewhere? (Something whis is not wiped already, as I reinstalled this driver a couple of times.)
    • Please point me to an official description on how to install old drivers, as I couldn't manage to install an old driver, yet. My Windows always tells me I'm already using the latest driver (even if I uninstall and use the default Generic Driver).
