For quite a time I am thinking of building a compact PC which would have a PCI slot for a specialist card I need. I also want to have a decent 3D/ GPGPU capabilities.
So actually for me a long-forgotten DTX form factor would be the best one - one PCI slot for my specialist card nearer to the CPU, one PCIe slot further away to put a graphics card n and all my dreams come true. Another way to get to the same point would be to have an ITX FM2+ motherboard with a single PCI slot - I would be absolutely happy with integrated GPU.
Unfortunately, neither option seems viable. You simply can not find any DTX board with PCI+ PCIe slot combo, be it from AMD or... . If one looks at ITX boards with PCI slot, then motherboards based on AMD processors are all sporting E-350s and therefore are exceedingly slow runners. Of course you can find ITX motherboards with a PCI slot, but for the CPUs of other manufacturer, which do not have such a good integrated graphics.
At the same time, if you are looking at the compact cases on Amazon (or elsewhere) - you will find plenty of DTX compatible cases, being sold as "ITX cases".
Here is what I get for "ITX case" on my first page of Amazon search : Thermaltake Core V1, Cooler Master RC-110-KKN2 , Sharkoon CA-I, SilverStone 12049 Sugo , Sharkoon Shark Zone , Powercool Qube, BitFenix BFC-PHE-300-WWXKK-RP. They all are DTX cases in fact. This form factor was invented by AMD, but now do try to find a DTX motherboard for them with FM2+ socket. I do not think you will be very successful.
I am wondering if AMD might see the chance to team up with some motherboard manufacturer to revive DTX form factor. It might sell upgrade kits, say DTX (PCIe+PCI) FM2+ motherboard + A6/A8/A10 APU. Such a kit would permit a significant increase in performance and energy efficiency for older compact PC. It would permit use of e.g. old high quality sound cards, or PCI TV tuners or ... etc.
There is absolutely no need to have huge boxes on our desks, or to pay huge premiums to use super-low-power (and slow) notebook CPUs in tiny (overheating) cases.
I hope some motherboard manufacturer might see this opportunity as well.
Or, if anyone has already done so - maybe you can point at such motherboard for me?
