driver install crashes linux

System is 64 bit CentOs 6.X that has been running for a couple of years. Some of the times when I run update (yum) I need to reinstall the graphics (R7 240) driver. On a few of these occasions, the installer complained about my needing to remove the old installation first. At this point I would use the --force option, and then rerun the installer, which has been successful until recently. However, the last time (~ 2months ago), running the installer causes a crash/reboot near the end of the process. I have made sure the OS is up to date and using the latest driver package from AMD. Seems like the --force did something (as it warned me it might) unhealthy.

I've search generically online and within the forums, and don't seem to find anything similar. Any pointers, links, (specific) RTFMs would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,
