OpenCL 2.0 on Ubuntu 14.04.3 with a Sapphire Nitro R9 390

Hi, I recently upgraded to a newer card for the main purpose of developing on OpenCL 2.0.  I have done the following: installed the latest Catlyst, SDK 3.0 Beta, and everything that I could find to make use of OpenCL 2.0.  When I tried running the samples, such as BinarySearch_DeviceSideEnqueue I get the following error message:

Warning!!! Device-Side Kernel Enqueue Feature not supported in 1.x platform , fallback to openCL 1.2 Features

Change the flags in the BinarySearchDeviceSideEnqueue_oclflag.txt to  cl-std=CL1.2 -g

When I query clinfo, I get the below return which shows the Platform as having 2.0 but neither of the devices.  I am at a loss, I have tried everything I could and read every FAQ and install page.

Thanks!

Hey there,

I am busy getting a similar setup running. The Sapphire Nitro R9 390 in my system is detected as opencl 2.0 capable device.

My driver version is shown to be 1800.5 in contrast to yours being 1729.3. Hope this information is useful to you.

Here is what clinfo prints out:

Thanks! can you tell me what exactly you installed to get where you are? I can not find out where that number comes from and how to make changes to the version.

I have a feeling there is something wrong with the driver... your clinfo also has the board correctly labelled as:AMD Radeon (TM) R9 390 Series where as mine is showing: DIR:67B1 RID:80... it also looks like you have a 64 bit system and mine is only 32 bit, so two different drivers with different results but same card.

It does recognize the name in windows:

But not in linux:

Can you help me find where in the OpenCL 2.0 specification is it written that the specification is only for 64-bit machines?  I have not read anything along the line of 32-bit machines being left out from the specification.  Thanks for your help!  It also doesn't explain why the Windows driver recognizes the card by name and the Linux driver does not.

Right on the download page it lists 32-bit machines with OpenCL 2.0:

Thanks for the help!

Can you help me find where in the OpenCL 2.0 specification is it written that the specification is only for 64-bit machines?

The behavior depends on supported driver and h/w of the particular implementation. It has nothing to do with OpenCL specification. Currently, on AMD platform, some OpenCL2.0 features (e.g. SVM) only work on 64-bit system. As a result, OpenCL 2.0 supported devices are only enabled on 64-bit system.

You may check the document "AMD APP SDK Beta FAQ" which clearly says:

47. Which operating systems support OpenCL 2.0 on AMD platforms?

For the list of operating systems with OpenCL 2.0 support on AMD platforms, see the "Compatible Operating Systems" section under the AMD Catalyst driver download page. At the time of this writing, AMD supports OpenCL 2.0 on only 64-bit operating systems.

Note: Same thing applies to application also. To access the OpenCL 2.0 feature like SVM, the application/program needs to be built as 64-bit application, otherwise, it will fail.

It also doesn't explain why the Windows driver recognizes the card by name and the Linux driver does not.

I agree with you. However, I'm not sure about the reason. It may be an installation issue. Did you try to reinstall it?

Thanks... I swear I read everything I could about this card and driver, and the requirements, and I never came across anything that even remotely suggested to me that I needed a 64 bit OS... and yes I tried reinstalling fglrx, amdcccle, core, and dev and same result... it didn't recognize the card.  So I spent a few hours installing the 64 bit version today of Ubuntu 14.04.3 and viola it recognizes my card and shows OpenCL 2.0... I don't have the brain cells to try and run the 2.0 samples (nor could I accept the fall out if it didn't work!)... but I literally worked on this for 3 weeks straight and maybe now I can finally get some sleep!

Now I get to relearn everything for 64-bit and all the differences...

Thanks!  This is very helpful!!

Mike
