Windows 9 could be free for 7, Vista, XP users

Word has it that Windows XP, Vista, and 7 might be allowed to upgrade free of charge to Windows 9 in order to boost adoption of the new operating system and thus convince more users to upgrade. This would clearly help not only Microsoft, but also the PC industry, which is still struggling to boost sales despite the release of the Windows 8 modern operating system.

If this is true, I wouldn't expect much beyond Windows 9 Basic, though I would be surprised if there wasn't a lengthy promotional period for the Home and Professional editions for $20 and $40, same as Windows 8...Now what to do with my Windows 8 Professional DVD...

The one thing I haven't seen: Will Windows 9 finally ship in 64 bit only!?
