RPMFusion Catalyst - Steam now crashes X on launch

    wieschie

I'm running the latest version of Fedora 19.  I previously had steam installed, but none of my games could launch because my OpenGL version was 3.2.  So, I decided to install the kmod-catalyst packages from RPMFusion.  The install went fine, and I had OpenGL 4.2!  But now just trying to launch steam crashes X and logs me out.  I'm using the unoffical steam repo for fedora (http://spot.fedorapeople.org/steam/steam.repo), and have tried reinstalling it.  Any idea what's going on?

Some system information (let me know if there are other logs / information that would be helpful).

      $uname -r

      3.9.9-302.fc19.x86_64

      $fglrxinfo

      display: :1  screen: 0

OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400 Series

OpenGL version string: 4.2.12337 Compatibility Profile Context 13.101

EDIT: I did a bit more detective work and came up with this by running steam through bash and redirecting output to a log:

Couldn't find dpkg, please update steamdeps for your distribution.

The card is Powercolor 6870, log from crashed X is attached.

Sitting without games until kernel-3.11 releases with its glorious radeon driver changes now will teach me to never dist-upgrade with proprietary drivers in action again :/

Fedora 18 with Catalyst 13.4 were the first, the last and the only time, Catalyst actually worked almost without hanging and crashing. Now i'm stuck with 13.6.

Same here. Starting "steam" or "glxinfo32" crashes X and logs me out. "glxgears", "fgl_glxgears", "glxinfo" and "glxinfo64" work correctly.

              Kernel: Linux/x86_64 3.11.3-201.fc19.x86_64

              driver: fglrx from rpmfusion

I installed Steam from the fedorapeople-Repository and I installed a lot of 32-Bit packages:

              http://spot.fedorapeople.org/steam/steam.repo -> /etc/yum.repos.d/steam.repo

              yum install steam

              yum install mesa* mesa*i686 libX11-devel.i686 glibc-devel.i686 libtxc_dxtn.i686 xorg-x11-drv-catalyst-libs.i686

              chmod -R 777 /proc/ati/

==> How can I get the 32-Bit-drivers working correctly?

Personally, i fixed it by removing Catalyst once and for all.

With such blatant glitches i would rather go for competing products than to deal with it. Open driver is the only reason i and many of my peers are still don't.

well, i thought so before too, while having dri+composite

but just today i realized that blender works better with ati driver and desktop monitors controlled better as well

3d-games goes faster and now i got gpu+cpu full rendering ability,

i don't need xrandr anymore and actually can setup performance of GL, dri - can't, vesa - don't support most of that

and yes for many cases this can be just your distro maintainers issue (permissions and groupmod can be set up differently)

really i had about 7-8 fps in vega and flight simulator - now it's much more.

and actually there are bugZ everywhere, so just fixin...

                    I solved the same problem:

                    sudo rm /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so

                    sudo ln -s /usr/lib/fglrx/libGL.so /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libGL.so

The problem was when using libGL.so from mesa, not from fglrx
