The Intel "Devils's Canyon" i7-4790K is a pretty good gaming CPU. I run them. Intel didn't produce any new CPU that I thought were worth upgrading from it, until Ryzen launched that is. I used to run an a very similar setup as my main PC. I had HD7970/R9280x in Crossfire. A single HD7970/R9280x used to struggle in some games like Tom Clancy's The Division at 1080p Ultra. If you want to do a low cost AMD GPU upgrade try getting a single R9 Nano or Fury X second hand. Otherwise there are some great deals on Vega 56/64 GPU at the moment if you want to stay with AMD GPU.
