"Stress Test" option in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition

Hello Red Team,

Click here to learn about the "Stress Test" feature in the 2021 AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition blog. As you know, I'm not an overclocker, but I thought you may find this information helpful....

"If you are an advanced user, the new “Stress Test” option and updated performance tuning UI are the tools you need to test out your tuning. Running a Stress Test is easy: check your overclock stability with a simple click. New temperature gauges make it easier than ever to understand performance readouts. We have also added indicators for performance limitations which allow you to see where there is room for improvement."

I am not an advanced user, but I decided to run a 60s stress test on my rig as stock. I was happy to see that I passed without crashing or any issues.

It did provide me with some information, but since I am an extreme novice at this, I don't know how to take that information to make it better.

My next step is to take a look at the Auto Overclock option that @Sam_AMD posted about in another thread to see how it works on my GPU. From my first look through the AMD Adrenalin software, I saw a GPU overclock option but not a CPU one. Perhaps that is somewhere deeper in the settings.

With my RX480 starting to meet the lower end of recommended graphics for most games, I would love to see if I can squeeze a little more juice out of it until I have to go and buy a new AMD 6XXX series, or you know... win one

Hi @Key-J

That's what I thought was the original reason, or at least one of the top reasons, for overclocking your CPU. Back in the day, I remember wondering how I could play AAA games that had high min-specs (i.e. my CPU's clock wasn't as fast).

If you don't mind, let us (noobs) know what you learn about the Auto Overclock feature

Ok,

So I put it through a test tonight while streaming (thought I might as well go big) and I feel like it really did do a good job! I will try to post some more details, screen capture and images in the other thread once I compile them.

Hey at least nothing caught fire!

My new RX6600 fails the stress test ...

It runs start to finish, doesn't crash, but reports a fail

Temperatures, fans everything seems normal.

Is there a log somewhere that records the test that failed and why it failed?

thank you

Hello, have you done any procedures for overclocking undervolt? Or are you using a video card in the drain? If the video card is working properly and is on the stack, there should be no errors in the stress test, try the OCCT stress test, you can choose what to test there, and if the envelopes fall down, you will know what the problem is.

I doubt there is anything wrong. I have a brand new 6650XT on completely stock settings. It fails the stress test every time although there is no indication of any stability issues with the card.

The stress test functionality appears to be bugged. If this effects you, I suggest you file a bug report with bug reporting tool in Adrenalin. Something appears to have happened between 22.6.1 and now.

I ran the stress test on my new rx 6800 and it failed with default settings. I also have been crashing on destiny can barely even play the game. All my drivers are up to date and I just built the PC. I'm not sure what the problem is and have factory reset everything and freshly downloaded everything and I'm still having the problem.

Perhaps you have a defective video card, check the power connections for the video card so that the connector is fully inserted and preferably (if you have 2 connectors of 8 or 6 pins, connect them with two separate cables from the power supply)

I check that they were fully inserted and re-ran the test and it still failed. Any other suggestions?

Of course, you can also check the video card on another PC, if the same situation manifests itself there, then hand it over under warranty, apparently a factory defect, if the problem does not manifest itself, then there is a problem with your PC, with some specific component (you need to calculate which one). Try to test it on another PC if there is such an opportunity with a friend or in a service center, maybe or in a store that sells components.

Hallo, a friend of mine and me had the exact same Problems, tried everything. Than i got an idea and tested it. i downgraded back to the Adrenalin version 22.5.1 and everything started to work properly again. with the versions 22.6.1 and specelly 22.7.1 there are only issues with the powerhorse GPU´s RX 6800 and up. hopfully this will be fixed soon.

And if this is nessesery. CPU Ryzen 7 5800x3d, GPU RX 6900 XT, Mainboard X570, and 64 GB 3200 MTS RAM Patriot viper for the compability on the Mainboard.

My 6700XT passed with no problems. Card is fantastic, cant barely hear the fans at 1450 RPM. Try different software, I think MSI afterburner includes a stress test

A lot of internet testers have found that there are many microsecond long hard power draws from all cards on both sides at all levels.

So if you have a reasonable power supply, check how much of its power is available on the 12volt rail. If it's less that most all of it and you are close to the recommended power supply for your card, then it could easily have power excursions in the microsend range that are pulling more than you over current protect will allow and thus fail the test.

Depending on GPU, board partner, and power supply you have this could be causing the issue Ina stress test and you may never see it in game.

I personally recommend at least 200 watts of headroom over the recommended PS for any amd card (or any card) as doing so will keep your system in the max effiency power draw for a power supply.

50-60% of a psu's rated wattage is where it's most efficient. You may not save but a few cents a month in power, but the planet saves tons of carbon emissions and maybe it will help us live in the century to come.

It appears the latest driver has corrected this issue, at least for me. I ran a good handful of tests on 22.8.2 yesterday and I was not able to replicate the problems I experienced before. Anyone who has this issue previously, I'd suggest you try again and let us know your results.
