USB performance/connectivity issues on Threadripper 1950x

Jump to solution

Just got a new Asus Zenith Extreme setup with AMD 1950x processor. Build is lightning fast, but is experiencing some strange USB connectivity issues. We use a secure USB hardware key that is checked by our software at various intervals. During certain testing, this is stressed a significant amount and are seeing both exponentially reduced performance as well as random errors and disconnects. This USB device is used by our company on a daily basis, as well as by thousands of our clients, without issue. We have a new AMD Ryzen machine with an equivalent ASUS ROG motherboard that is not experiencing these issues.

So far I have tried just about every available BIOS (0305, 0503, 0601, 9980, 9906, and 9910, 0046) to no avail. I've also tried installing a separate PCIe USB 3.0 card, but experience the same issue (interestingly enough, the card which is PCIe x1 would only work at all if it was in an x16 slot, not the x1 or the x4). Have also tried disabling all other USB ports except for those on the add-on card, changing PCIe modes, etc., but that didn't change anything either. I've tried the fix that some people were seeing benefits from of disabling and removing 'useplatformclock' via bcdedit, with no change.

Being that it's affecting both onboard USB and external PCIe USB adapters, it seems like it could be a chipset driver issue (currently have latest installed). Is anyone else seeing similar issues? Does anyone know if there were major differences for these subsystems vs those on Ryzen chips (our issue is not present on the Ryzen system)?

Well, I solved the problem for finally. Had to manually override the USB drivers that Windows wanted to use, with the ones in the AMD Chipset package. Don't know why it wouldn't use those to begin with, and it wants to revert back to the generic Microsoft drivers if I allow it to. Really frustrating that installing the AMD Chipset drivers didn't force Windows to use its drivers in the first place. If it helps, I manually selected the drivers from C:\AMD\AMD-Chipset-Drivers\Packages\Drivers\SBDrv\USB... and then the corresponding ones for the controllers and hubs.

I would contact the company that makes the hardware key and get them to test them on a Threadripper based system. It's more likely to be a compatibility issue with the particular key type rather than a general fault with the USB interface.

Have been in contact with the manufacturer, but they are unable to get a Threadripper test setup, as this is a legacy product that has no active development. It's strange that this isn't an issue for the thousands of clients that we have, using the exact same key, across endless combinations of hardware. We also have a brand new Ryzen system that was setup a couple of months ago, and have no issues on that chipset.

Ryzen USB drivers will likely surface in a later release of Windows 10, do not expect generic drivers to work on the latest platforms.

It would still be nice for AMD to at least package something with their chipset installer that puts something a littler more valid in for the controllers/hubs on Windows 10. Even if it's just the same ones for Windows 7.

AMD is not supporting Windows 7 with Ryzen, Windows 10 is the current shipping version of Windows and I have been using it for a long time. It works fine.

You're missing the point here. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with Windows 10, it's the lack of official AMD drivers for 10, when they already provide ones for 7.

AMD just released a new driver a few days ago, and I expect another one soon now that the last update changed HDR in the display driver stack
