Ryzen - Ony 1 DIMM above 2666 MHz?

Jump to solution

Looking at the specs for the ASUS Prime X370-A mobo, there is a disclaimer:

Due to the limitation of AMD Ryzen processors, memory frequencies higher than DDR4 2666 MHz are supported only when using one DIMM.

Anyone know the story behind this?  I'd really like to use the maximum supported 3200 MHz memory (and have a full 32gb), but according to that disclaimer, I could only use 1 stick.

the didclaimer is due to too many people returning ram sticks not usually knowing how to set up bios and getting cheap ram. etc. and trying to run cheaper mobo's and expect top notch results..

if you want 3200mhz the #1 sticks are g.skill flare-x 3200mhz ...f4-3200c14d-16gfx  .. they will run as 3466mhz factory setting 16-16-16-18-38  they are the same sticks.. i run my 3200 flare x at 3600mhz.. if you need 32gb to do 3d modeling houses, cars, game creation. you will need a better mobo for stability.  and you will need to call distributor and ask them too please send you 2 16gb sets with consecutive serial number so its a gauranteed 32gb kit.

if any ram will run on your mobo at 3200 these are the ones. and all the little tweaks and voltages that make them run correctly will need set. dont expect to slap and go.

recommendations for ryzen top optimizing. asus crosshair 6 hero , G.skill flare-x 3200mhz  , agesa 1006 bios found in asus forums. 1403 ..

the worst ram sticks to buy are the corsair vengance lps 3000mhz. dont do it... ryzen cpu as all cpus  have a memory mapping hole. ryzens is above 2933 a bit and between  around 3500mhz so 3000 is the worst its like all odd timings and right there where it errors out.. 2933 can be ruff to get going.. so you either stick to 2666 or jump to 3600 or luckily the few like flare -x run 3200 perfect.

I ended up going with the ASUS Prime X370-Pro AM4 AMD X370 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.1 USB 3.0 HDMI ATX Motherboards - AMD - Retail-New... and 32GB 4 X 8GB 2666MHZ DRAM DDR4-Newegg.com

I'm guessing I won't see any noticeable difference in the performance of the 2666 vs the 3200.

Really do appreciate all the great info!
