Ryzen 2500u limited to max. 2000mhz in Linux

It wasn't until the latest firmware update (linux-firmware) or kernel 4.17

The system is much slower with this frequency limitation!

On Windows it still can go up to 3ghz.

Hello again,

zenquiorrabrauliobo

I have just discovered how to toggle boost on / off as root user without restarting.

To enable / disable boost:

# echo "1" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/boost
# echo "0" > /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpufreq/boost

It's good to disable boost when you want to maximise battery or GPU performance.

I find that it can lose boost after running for a while, which can now be fixed by turning it off and back on.

Kernel: Arch Linux 5.2.0

Source: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/cpu-freq/boost.txt

Cheers,

brauliobo, I know almost nothing about Linux, but this sounds like a Linux issue to me.  I suggest you ask in an Linux forum.  Enjoy, John.

Which distro are you using out of interest?

Try booting from an older kernel if you still have them installed, should be selectable from the grub bootloader. If it reports the correct max speed then it is likely a bug in the newer kernel, if it still reports the lower speed then it might be an issue with the linux-firmware update.

Another possibility could be the amd64-microcode package, one of the recent patches for spectre v2 vulnerabilities may be the culprit.

I'm using archlinux here

I don't have an older kernel available to boot.

I'll try removing the amd 17th family microcode later to see if it works (file added at kernel/git/firmware/linux-firmware.git - Repository of firmware blobs for use with the Linux kernel)

the output of lscpu is correct.

Your CPU has a max frequency of 2GHz and max Turbo frequency of 3.6 Ghz.

Linux never shows anythig about Turbo max frequency but a max of your CPU specs.

That does not means Turbo  frequency is not working. It does if your system need it.

What you want is to play with cpupower util and set everything to performance

if you don't care about battery live.

Here an example of turbo kicking in why compiling on my EPYC workstation:

I'm sure my CPU frequency never exceeds 2000mhz, /proc/cpuinfo and others confirms that under full load

same problem with kernel 4.16, will try now with 4.15. `cpupower frequency-info` output is a bit different with Pstate frequencies

Still low frequency with 4.15.

So likely a newer BIOS issue with Linux...

No it won't help since your BIOS provides latest microcode already.

No you don't need to boot to Windows , it won't help.

...

boost state support:

...

However your BIOS has some problems .. ACPI /IOMMU bugs from a quick look.

Also you are using an not-yet-released custom 4.18-rcx/git kernel ,

can you boot in some released one please ? 4.17.4 would be an good start.

( Please avoid loading of custom modules or using custom patches )

Also what is the last working kernel for you ?

Also why do you need any of these ? :

rcu_nocbs=0-15 pci=noaer idle=nomwait

Reporting kernel or BIOS bugs to the CPU Vendor forum won't help much in general.

For kernel bugs Kernel.org Bugzilla Main Page  or the LKML ..

However we can try to sort out.

`idle-nomwait` is needed to fix freezes, check epyc 7551 spontaneously resets after 10mins rendering

the other cmd options I've just removed but still no frequency boost

I'm using the latest 4.17 kernel at ~agd5f/linux - Unnamed repository; edit this file 'description' to name the repository. , although it was named 4.18 it is 4.17

I don't remember which was the latest working kernel.

You don't need idle=nomwait , that's already fixed in never firmware

but I don't think that ever affected your CPU.

> I'm using the latest 4.17 kernel at ~agd5f/linux - Unnamed repository; edit this file 'description' to name the repository. , although it was named 4.18 it is 4.17

Oh oh .. No master aka 'amd-staging-drm-next' branch is where code in dumped in.

Have a look at the branch names which you have to 'pull' on top the kernel you are using.

Eg: drm-fixes-<kernel-version> or drm-next-<kernel-version> , etc

> I don't remember which was the latest working kernel.

Well without to know what kernel worked is kind hard to say what broke that feature.

Also since you updated the BIOS it may be even the BIOS itself who broke somethig.

Do you use ryzen + linux? Almost every user has been experiencing those annoying freezes!!! It was only after idle=nomwait that freezes stopped happenning. I was having usually a few everyday!

The freezes also happen in the official Archlinux kernel. I'll try 4.16 soon.

I've tried those drm-fixes-* as well. Please ask me things you know and tested before.

It can't be the BIOS, as I said before that it works under Windows 10!

In fact I don't own any Windows box since 2002 myself , so yes I use Linux on / for everything.

Ok so use idle=nomwait and hope HP fixes that sometimes since AMD pushed out an fix since a long time now.

( Also if you look closer to epyc 7551 spontaneously resets after 10mins rendering , you'll notice

I'm one of those guys who helped to find the issue )

I've tried those drm-fixes-* as well. Please ask me things you know and tested before.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean?

I do know what I'm talking about ..

I build myself like 30++ kernels a day , including those from amd-drm-* branches ( and lots more ).

It can't be the BIOS, as I said before that it works under Windows 10!

That is wrong.

Please look closer your dmesg and then you'll notice this:

'ACPI: [Firmware Bug]: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored'

That means the follwoing:

Your BIOS Vendor , in this case HP , is doing different 'things' for different OS'es.

What those 'things' are can be partially decoded from an acpi dump of your machine

but most probably some parts are hiddedn in the firmware so one just can guess.

Linux follows ACPI standards where such an 'do things for one OS this way or better while

different or worse for an other one' should not exists , even when possible.

Therefore Linux itself 'ignore's any call to _OSI(Linux) by default.

That's means again while your BIOS may work fine on Windows

it may not work at all on different OS.

Also before that bug there are some other ones and after that bug there folows much more ACPI errors.

Here is what you can try. Boot with the following appended to your kernel command line:

acpi_osi=Linux acpi_osi='!Windows 2012'

How? This laptop BIOS (as with most laptop BIOS) is very limited in options and OC is surely not there

Also important to note that I did a few BIOS updates as HP were releasing them. I'm using the latest, F17 for this notebook model

The performance was also much better before. Currently:

~ LANG=en dd if=/dev/zero bs=1M count=1024 | md5sum
1024+0 records in
1024+0 records out
1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB, 1.0 GiB) copied, 3.07016 s, 350 MB/s
cd573cfaace07e7949bc0c46028904ff  -

Before it used to return around 650mb/s, so very likely the frequency limitation is causing the general system slowdown.

Yes it will cause some slowdown but not 50% ..

What motherboard?

You have latest BIOS installed? Or you upgraded it before you started to have issues?

I had similar case when I was using older BIOS - most likely it was broken ACPI.

It is a laptop motherboard, HP Envy x360 bq000. I'm using the latest BIOS from HP, available at HP ENVY 15-bq000 x360 Convertible PC - Driver Downloads | HP® Customer Support

I also have an HP x360 Envy 15z with a 2500U model 2017.

Right now, i just did an clean install (as clean as possible) on ubuntu 18.04.1

And its turboing as expected, top 3.6Ghz single core load.

I have the latest bios in the HP support site.

Found the issue. If I enable the HDD with Windows that enables the EFI bootloader, then the turbo mode doesn't work.

If the Legacy bootloader is enabled and the EFI bootloader isn't, then turbo frequencies work normally.

Just need a way now handle turbo frequencies with EFI.

Hello brauliobo,

and sorry for bothering, I was planing buy new laptop to replace dead 12 yers old Acer laptop that run on AMD Athlon X2 QL-62. Sadly I prefer AMD, but all information about lack of Linux support, segmentation faults and instability scare me off and I start thinking to buy laptop based on i5 from competitor....

Can you test stability of your ryzen device form Ubuntu 17.04 installed on USB USB flash drive and run script kill-ryzen.sh ?

https://github.com/suaefar/ryzen-test

This script will download gcc and try compile on your platform if your cpu is affected segfaults you will have information that cpu have build flaw.

More dangerous is to test turbo - you  can always use stress-ng to generate havy load and observe with sensors + /cat/proc clock speed and temperature...

Best regards

Sorry, I use archlinux. The system is completely stable now.

Brauliobo thank you for reply, your answer give me hope that  setup with Debian testing or Gentoo will be available for me.

If that is not problem could you:

Stress all cores on that device and read temperature on CPU reported by sensors + speed on all cores  after 10 minutes of test.

And provide information how long on full battery that HP model can "survive" under Linux with only light load (x.org, terminal, web browser with simple site, Wifi, not to bright display settings - nothing special).

Best regards

Would it be possible for you to give me a little more information about this "solution"? Am I to understand that you have 2 HDDs, one with Windows and an EFI bootloader, and one with Linux with a separate Legacy BIOS bootloader? Then in the BIOS you disabled the WIndows HDD so that it had to use the Legacy bootloader? Then when you checked lscpu the registered speed of the cpu was correct?

I have a system which is ONLY linux, with 1 SSD. Fedora 29, Secure Boot enabled, obviously UEFI bootloader. Do you think if I disabled Secure Boot and installed with Legacy BIOS that would solve the problem for me?

Thank you for any insight!

I'd also like to know more detail to understand what I can do, I have a lenovo 330s with r5 2500u and its capped at 2.00Ghz

I just got a new HP laptop with this CPU.

I have found that loading the AMD microcode early on init resolves this problem.

  • Archlinux system
  • systemd-boot init
  • amd-ucode package
  • SSD contains EFI, Windows C:\, Linux Root

The microcode is meant to be loaded by linux-firmware during boot, but maybe that's not working 100%.

Hello, can you please guide me on how to load the microcode on boot?  I am using Ubuntu on my system and it is capped at 2Ghz.

I tried it with Manjaro and had the same problem

I found that the turbo boost does not take into effect until a reboot after the microcode is applied.
Please try restarting the computer after the first boot.

This bug is present on latest linux 4.20.

zenquiorra

I believe the AMD microcode package in Ubuntu is called amd64-microcode.

I would then edit /etc/default/amd64-microcode to load the microcode early and update the initramfs.

There are other ways to do this, but can be summed into 3 commands (requires superuser privilege):

# aptitude install amd64-microcode

# echo "AMD64UCODE_INITRAMFS=early" >> /etc/default/amd64-microcode

# update-initramfs

I'm not running Ubuntu so I can't test it first hand, but check the results:

$ dmesg | grep microcode

$ watch "grep 'cpu MHz' /proc/cpuinfo"

Re: Ryzen 2500u limited to max. 2000mhz in Linux

     zenquiorra

I loaded the AMD Microcode early but the bug is still there.. I followed what you mentioned and this is my updated amd-microcode file :

# Configuration script for amd64-microcode version 3

# initramfs helper

#

# Set this to "no" to disable automatic microcode updates on boot;

# Set this to "early" to always install microcode updates to the early initramfs

# Set this to "auto" to autodetect mode for current system (default);

#AMD64UCODE_INITRAMFS=auto

AMD64UCODE_INITRAMFS=early

But I am still facing the problem, the speed is still capped to 2000MHz. There are the current speed outputs
# lscpu | grep 'MHz'

CPU MHz:             1453.284

CPU max MHz:         2000.0000

CPU min MHz:         1600.0000

dmidecode -t processor | grep Speed

    Max Speed: 3600 MHz

    Current Speed: 2000 MHz

I have rebooted a number of times now.wahm5824

Can you please guide me more on this.

I'm ignoring the max MHz from lscpu and the boost state from cpupower -c all frequency-info.

Trusting the clock speed from watch "grep 'cpu MHz' /proc/cpuinfo":

cpu MHz     : 1397.488
cpu MHz     : 1390.950
cpu MHz     : 1383.094
cpu MHz     : 1385.413
cpu MHz     : 1384.977
cpu MHz     : 1360.215
cpu MHz     : 3490.055
cpu MHz     : 3432.826

Whilst running a test such as openssl speed or cryptsetup benchmark.

Another thing I've noticed, if I choose to boot too quickly from the boot menu, it seems to reduce the chance of gaining boost.

Try allowing 10 seconds for the CPU to 'ramp up' on the GRUB / Systemd boot menu, you might be able to tell by the sound of the fan.

wahm5824

Now I can see the clock speed crossing the 2GHz mark.

Thanks for helping me.

So this means that even though my clock speed is more, lscpu will still show wrong max speeds?

Also Can you explain why waiting for the CPU to 'ramp up' works this way. Because the same happened with me when booting quickly and waiting for sometime.

Anyway, my problem is overall solved. Thanks Again

That's great to hear and you're welcome.

Yes, maybe it's not 100% supported by the various Linux libraries at this moment.

No idea why. I run into the solution by accident.

  1. Enabling microcode early loading requires a reboot
  2. Forgotten to add the microcode image file to the boot entry file
  3. Manually typed in the image file, which took time

The sequence of events made it work. Until the next time that it doesn't work.
