RAM and old Athlon II X2 250

Hello,

My english is not very good, sorry for that.

I have an old Athlon II X2 250 (Regor). I would like to know what kind of DDR3 is possible to use with this processor.

Is it 1066MHz or 1333MHz ? Different sites and sources, different informations. I'm lost.

And what is the maximum of RAM it can manage with its dual channel ? 8Go ? 16 Go ?

What is the Make & Model of your Motherboard?

Your Motherboard's Spec will tell you how much RAM it supports with which type of generation processor.

As @elstaci states, it can depend on the motherboard memory speed support at factory settings, but it can also be overcome by overclocking. Many AM3 motherboards have BIOS memory setting of 800, 1066, 1333 or 1600, and AM3+ boards can add speeds up to 2133 or higher. Likewise the memory capacity will depend on the motherboard and dependent on a 64bit OS to support greater than 4GB of memory.

Overclocking introduces another consideration. Only Black Edition AM3/+ processors had unlocked multipliers, other processors like the Athlon II X2 250 could only be overclocked by the FSB. But increasing the FSB changes the memory speed based on the FSB:DRAM ratio.

So for example, I have an Athlon II X2 240. I have DDR3-1600 memory that if I set 1600 memory speed in BIOS will use a 1:4 ratio. (200 x 4 / 1 = 800MHz) If I want to overclock the processor, I increase the FSB, which means I have to decrease the FSB:DRAM ratio to keep the memory speed in spec.

Here I'm using a 250 FSB to reach 3500MHz CPU, with the 1333 memory ratio (3:10) which results in a memory speed of DDR3-1666 due to the increased FSB. (250 x 10 / 3 = 833MHz) This is on an 880G chipset AM3 board.

Thanks a lot for your ansers.

My Motherboard is a MSI GF615M-P33 V2. I think this motherboard can support 16Go. And I have (2x8 Dual Channel).

But I thought the processor have its own limit. I don't know if it's the same that the motherboard one. And i think that the max frequency for this AMD Athlon is 1066MHz.

I'll try to overclock to see if it works or not.

And CPU-Z doesn't give a lot of informations on RAM.

I believe when it says it supports a maximum memory size up to 16GB means that is the total amount of RAM Memory your motherboard supports.

Here is a Paste & Copy of your Motherboard's QVL list for RAM but it probably is very out-dated which is probably why it doesn't show any RAM larger than 4GB. So I would go to your RAM Manufacturer's website to see if it is compatible with your motherboard before purchasing:

According to the page @elstaci linked, your motherboard has 2 DIMM slots and supports 16GB total of memory, so yes 2x8 dual channel should work.

The processor does not have a memory frequency limit, it has a Front Side Bus or more specifically a HyperTransport/NorthBridge limit. This is by default 200 FSB x 10 = 2000 HT/NB. The memory is not linked 1:1 it is run at a ratio dependent on the FSB speed, not the processor. If you use the 1333 memory setting in the BIOS this results in a 3:10 memory ratio. (200 FSB x 10 / 3 = 666MHz or DDR3-1333) As you can see from my screenshots above I have my Athlon II X2 240 Regor running at a 250 FSB - 2500 HT/NB with memory at 833MHz or DDR3-1666.

You probably need to download an older version of CPU-Z to get detailed info on these old systems. Scroll to the very bottom of the Software page you will find version history. You can see from my screenshots I'm using CPU-Z 1.85
