Question: Does AMD not have AMD Techs to assist, only the "community"?

I'm not a techie, and need help choosing a newer AMD CPU for my Gigabyte GA-970A-D3 motherboard, if it's possible, and the most reasonable course of action. I'd prefer to, if possible, update my motherboard to newer standards rather than spend $$$$ on a new computer. Currently I have a desktop with an AMD FX-8150 CPU. (Going to the AMD website, it says the FX is only for laptops.  If so, I've got the biggest laptop on my desktop I've ever seen.) I'd think someone at AMD could quickly answer yes or no, and if yes, point me to what I need.  Not understanding the lingo makes it so I don't even know which questions to ask. If AMD does not support their products with Tech Support and only through the "community", I find that ......

If you just want to upgrade the hardware connected to your current Motherboard you need to first see which CPUs are supported by your motherboard.

Here is the CPU SUPPORT LIST for your motherboard. See which CPU that is a upgrade to the processor you now have: https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/GA-970A-D3-rev-30/support#support-cpu

You didn't indicate which Motherboard Revision you had but they are all basically the same as far as the FX83XX series CPUs. The Revision 3.0 does support the FX8150 CPU which is  why I posted the image of its CPU SUPPORT LIST.

So any FX83xx CPU would be a slight upgrade to what you have now. Make sure you have the latest last BIOS installed to make sure the new CPU will work and be supported.

NOTE: The FX Series CPUs both are made for Laptops and Desktops. Not exclusively for laptops. I had a FX8350 it is a sturdy dependable fast CPU. When I upgraded my PC  from a AM3+ PC to a Ryzen PC I replaced my wife's FX6350 with my FX8350 CPU.

EDIT: To answer your question about AMD Tech Support, in case you need to contact them in the future, here is their Online AMD SERVICE REQUEST (AMD Support) you can fill out: https://www.amd.com/en/support/contact-email-form
