Need Help Choosing the Right AMD Processor for My Build

Hello,

I'm in the process of constructing a new computer and I want to use an AMD processor. But there are so many choices that I feel a little daunted and unsure of which one will best suit my requirements.

Game playing and video editing will be my main uses for this machine. I want to be able to edit high-resolution videos without any problems and play the newest games without any glitches.

Here are the other components I plan to use in my build:

  • Motherboard: MSI B550-A PRO
  • Graphics Card: AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT
  • RAM: 16GB DDR4

Based on my needs and the other components I've listed, which AMD processor would be the best fit for my build? Any advice or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi, based on your requirements, an AMD Ryzen processor with a high core count and clock speed would be ideal for your build. Here are a few options to consider:

  1. AMD Ryzen 7 5800X - This processor has 8 cores and 16 threads with a base clock speed of 3.8GHz and a boost clock speed of 4.7GHz. It offers excellent performance for gaming and video editing.

  2. AMD Ryzen 9 5900X - This processor has 12 cores and 24 threads with a base clock speed of 3.7GHz and a boost clock speed of 4.8GHz. It provides even more processing power than the Ryzen 7 5800X, making it ideal for demanding video editing tasks.

  3. AMD Ryzen 9 5950X - This processor has 16 cores and 32 threads with a base clock speed of 3.4GHz and a boost clock speed of 4.9GHz. It is the most powerful consumer-grade processor currently available from AMD, making it an excellent choice for high-end video editing workloads.

All of these processors are compatible with the MSI B550-A PRO motherboard and can handle the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card without any issues. However, it's worth noting that these processors can be quite expensive, so you may need to balance your performance needs with your budget.

Based on your requirements and the other components you have listed, I would recommend the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X or the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X as suitable options for your build.

Both of these AMD processors have high core counts and clock speeds, which will provide excellent performance for video editing and gaming. The Ryzen 9 5900X has 12 cores and 24 threads, while the Ryzen 7 5800X has 8 cores and 16 threads. This means that the Ryzen 9 5900X will provide slightly better performance for heavily threaded applications such as video editing, while the Ryzen 7 5800X will provide slightly better gaming performance due to its higher clock speeds.

In terms of compatibility, both processors are compatible with the MSI B550-A PRO motherboard that you have selected, and will work well with the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT graphics card and 16GB of DDR4 RAM.

Ultimately, the choice between the Ryzen 7 5800X and the Ryzen 9 5900X will depend on your budget and specific requirements. If you can afford the higher cost of the Ryzen 9 5900X, it will provide slightly better performance for video editing, but if you prioritize gaming performance, the Ryzen 7 5800X may be a better fit for you.

If you have to use older generation AMD, you should go for the 5800x3d. That's gaming focused chip with 8 cores so its good in programs aswell.

If you are building from scratch, use the newest lineup, for example 7800x3d.

I would suggest three options.

  1. If you are on a tighter budget and with a mixed use case, go for the 5700X. It features 8C/16T.
  2. If you are more gaming centric, go for the 5800X3D with 8C/16T and 3DVCache. It is the pinnacle for gaming on AM4.
  3. If you are more editing centric, go for the 5900X with 12C/24T. It will do editing smoothly and of course you can also game with it.
