Looking for recommendation of CPU Cooling and PU for AMD Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX

Hi AMD Community!

I'm building a new PC and got a Ryzen Threadripper 2970WX with a ASRock x399 Professional Gaming motherboard but I'm not sure exactly what kind CPU Cooling and Power Unit I need to get for the processor.

I saw in amazon that a lot of costumers that purchased the TR 2970WX apparently also got the Noctua NH-U12S TR4-SP3, but I'm not sure if this is the correct model or which alternatives might provide better cooling for it.

Related to choosing the correct Power Unit, is it mostly a matter of the type of cooling solution and size of the PC case what should be taken into account?

Thank you!

Hi sergeminator,

You can see the compatible coolers at https://www.amd.com/en/thermal-solutions-threadripper

Thank you ruroini51, I hadn't seen that list before and it's super helpful indeed.

In the Amazon and NewEgg reviews for the TR 2970WX several reviewers mention that even at stock speed some specific approved cooling solutions some users still ran into heating problems. After all these years, is there some solid recommendation on which option from that list might be the best guaranteed way to avoid any overheating issues?

Hi sergeminator,

I can't speak for all scenarios, for my case (https://www.coolermaster.com/catalog/cases/mid-tower/masterbox-td500-argb/) with a Threadripper 3960X running an NZXT X73 (https://www.nzxt.com/products/kraken-x73) top mounted results in 83C after a 48 thread 24hr stress test.  Idle is 37C, my actual use is less than 75C.  I'm happy with this.  If I front mounted the cooler there was insufficient air flow for it to work (front case inlet area is small around the front clear plastic).  It would reach 95C (CPU thermal throttled) in less than an hour.  Also bear in mind I only have a GT1030 GPU, so not much heat from GPU, (Threadripper not used for deskotp).

The same case and cooler with a 1660Ti and my 3900X tops out at 73C with a 24 thread stress test while stressing GPU.
