Knowledge Only! CPU upgrade for HP Pavilion dv6-6145dx.

Jump to solution

I have an HP Pavilion laptop with an AMD A8-3500 APU w/ Radeon Graphics. I have upgraded to 16Gb of RAM and a 1Tb hard-drive and replaced the fan/heat-sink with a new model.

Does anyone have knowledge of an upgrade to the CPU that would also boost performance?

Thanks

Hey ironmanxp,

These are the APU's that are guaranteed to be compatible with your Fs1 socket based mobile. Upgrading from a 35W TDP to a higher 45W TDP APU isn't an issue, but please remember to use an extremely high end non-conductive thermal interface material such as Gelid GC Extreme that is capable of providing you with the maximum heat spread when doing so. This is definitely necessary, not simply a precautionary measure.

I've performed similar upgrade procedures on multiple laptops containing APU's from the 3000m family, 4000m family and 5000m family without issues. Below I have listed the compatible Fs1 socket APU's that exceed your current APU's capabilities.

A8-3520M   0.032 LN1-B0 4 1600 2500 4096 35

A8-3510MX 0.032 LN1-B0 4 1800 2500 4096 45

A8-3530MX 0.032 LN1-B0 4 1900 2600 4096 45

A8-3550MX 0.032 LN1-B0 4 2000 2700 4096 45

Here is a link to CPU boss, which compares your A8 3500m to the A8 3550MX, so you can review the data and determine if this solution suits your needs. Also note that if upgrading to any of the options above will not provide you with more graphics performance as they all contain the 6620g, which is already contained in your A8 3500m. So, CPU processing power would have to be the sole selling point for you when considering an upgrade.

Anyways, I hope this helps definitively clarify things.  Be well and have a nice day.

Could you be more specific as to why it can't be upgraded.  Is there a limitation due to the type of motherboard, etc?  If so, could the motherboard be upgraded? Thanks

The CPU is soldered to the motherboard. The motherboard cannot be upgraded.

You must be thinking of a different CPU or laptop.  I just replaced the cooling fan and heat-sink in this PC and I took the CPU out to clean it off before I applied a new heat-sink pad when I put the new fan in.

Then contact HP, each laptop is custom designed by the OEM.
