Before you label me a lunatic for asking such a question, let me make my point clear. The 4080 and 4090 are obviously bottlenecked by last gen CPUs (Ryzen 5000, Intel 12th gen) at high resolutions (1440p and 4K). I'm playing at 1440p 144Hz.

I want to get the 7900 XTX next month. But I'm worried that if I pair it with my 5900X, it won't be able to reach its full potential, meaning it won't hit around 100% GPU utilization when it needs to and only reach around 80%.

This makes me regret not waiting for the 5800X3D which seems to just trash my CPU.

Am I dumb or is my CPU really going to affect the potential of the 7900 XTX? I really hate that I bought it right now.

Load up all the eye candy whatever game has to offer to put the most load you can on the GPU and go from there

We don't have the actual numbers on what the 7900xtx can do, I have the 5900x and a 6900xt right now and it's a very very good experience for what I do (excessive multitasking), and I'm currently planning on a release day upgrade to the 7900xtx

As I'm running UHD 144, I find the GPU lacking, but I think if I were on QHD instead it would be a much better experience on my current hardware

Would the 5800x3d be better for gaming specifically?

Yes, only gaming. I'm worried that the 7900 XTX will be bottlenecked considering it's between the 4080 and 4090. So is the X3D CPU the way to go? I don't want to invest in a full AM5 upgrade as it's expensive. The X3D is 300 eur here on sale.

Go to this FPS/Bottlenck website and input your CPU, GPU and RAM installed. It will show you if either your GPU or CPU will bottleneck or not.

They give a general idea not an accurate one since there are so many different PC configurations.

I would assumei t depends on what you play and especially if raytracing is on or off. I read that direct storage can free up to 40% of cpu usage (in most cases likely less). Also as games become more demanding you'll likely end up GPU limited anyway. I would not worry too much about 5900.

Side-grading to the 5800X3D would just be a waste of money imo. If you want to spend more money, get a 4K monitor. The bottleneck from your CPU will be even less there than at 1440p.

I think you haven't seen just how much the 5900X / 5950X bottleneck the 4090. Same thing will apply to the 7900 XTX as it's a very fast card. If I want the best for gaming on AM4 for the next 2 years until I do a full Zen 5 + RDNA4 rebuild, it's 5800X3D + 7900 XTX with fast memory at 1440p high refresh rate. There are many previous owners of a 5900 / 5950X who switched to the X3D and they don't regret it one bit as it allowed them to use their 4090 to it's fullest potential. Made up my mind and ordered it.

5900X is nice and all, but truth of the matter is, I don't need 12 cores. It was great with my 3070, it's okay with my 6900 XT and definitely won't hold up with the XTX No more replies needed, thanks.
