I have an AMD Phenom II x64 965 processor and in task manager it shows it running at .79 Ghz. WHY?! My frame rate in games sucks and I am getting very frustrated.

I have an AMD Phenom II x64 965 3.4 GHz processor but in task manager it shows it running at .79 Ghz.  WHY?!  My frame rate in games sucks and I am getting very frustrated.

Because you have Cool-n-Quiet enabled. But that should only happen at idle. When your gaming it should be running at 3.4GHz.

Thanks for your reply, how do I disable cool and quiet? And why does it list it as an 800 MHz processor in the system information?

Cool and Quiet may be disabled in the system BIOS/UEFI.

The system reduces frequency to 800 MHz when the CPU is at idle, in order to save power. This is standard practice in desktop computer processors during the most recent decade, and is normal operation for the Phenom II.

Thank you for your reply, however I looked in the system bios after the last reply and it is disabled, so that is obviously not the issue

Furthermore, with the CPU running at 90% plus utilization my speed remains at .79 GHz

Your need to give up more information about your system if you want someone to help you. If you don't know your system specs, download AIDA64 free trial and run the report and save it as text not HTML. Copy and paste this part:

Motherboard: CPU Type OctalCore AMD Ryzen 7 1700, 3500 MHz (35 x 100)

Motherboard Name ASRock X370 Killer SLI/ac (4 PCI-E x1, 2 PCI-E x16, 2 M.2, 4 DDR4 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN, WiFi)

Motherboard Chipset AMD X370, AMD K17 SCH, AMD K17 IMC

System Memory 16314 MB DIMM3: Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2666C16 8 GB DDR4-2133 DDR4 SDRAM (16-15-15-36 @ 1066 MHz)

DIMM4: Corsair Vengeance LPX CMK16GX4M2A2666C16 8 GB DDR4-2133 DDR4 SDRAM (16-15-15-36 @ 1066 MHz)

BIOS Type AMI (07/21/2017) Communication Port Communications Port (COM1)

Display: Video Adapter Radeon RX 580 Series (8 GB)

Without information like this all anyone can do is guess what the problem is.

This is correct.

For example (this might be your problem, but might not - we don't have enough info yet), if you are running the Phenom II X4 965 in a motherboard that does not properly support that CPU, then it may run it at only 800 MHz. Make sure that your motherboard model supports the CPU, and BIOS is up to date.

The specs you requested are below. I was incorrect as far as my CPU. It is a 2.4GHz but running constantly at 800 MHz even when gaming. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

OK. Probably the BIOS is too old to support that CPU, so you will need to update the BIOS.

The list of compatible CPUs is here:

M4A79XTD EVO CPU Support| Motherboards | ASUS USA

Note that Phenom II X6 1035 is supported as of BIOS file 2001, which is dated 02/04/10. Your current BIOS is older than that, 09/21/09. You can download an updated BIOS here:

https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/M4A79XTD_EVO/HelpDesk_BIOS/

Follow the directions carefully.
